TITLE: True Worship

TEXT: Romans 12: 1 – 2

“12 Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your
bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper
worship. 2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the
renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his
good, pleasing and perfect will.”

Outline
Introduction
- 1 Samuel 15: 1 – 35
22 “Tell me,” Samuel said. “Does the Lord really want sacrifices and
offerings? No! He doesn't want your sacrifices. He wants you to obey him.
23 Rebelling against God or disobeying him because you are proud is just
as bad as worshiping idols or asking them for advice. You refused to do
what God told you, so God has decided that you can no longer be king.” 1
Samuel 15: 22 – 23
- We as a God’s people, redeemed by the blood of Jesus Christ, and has
been called and given a privilege to worship in the One True God. But we
need to remember that this One True God is a holy God, worthy of all
respect and honor, so we His people must worship Him according to His
own desire and what has been written in the scripture on how to worship
Him.
- Maybe to some of you, you already have an idea what worship is all about but let
us first understand what we already know, because maybe, just maybe it falls on
the category of what worship is not. Let me give you first what worship is not.
I. Worship is not.
a) Worship is not all about us.
- Though we will be blessed as we come to worship God still it’s not all
about us, it’s all about Him and Him alone.
- We come to the Lord with a grateful heart and gratitude for who He is
and what He has done in our lives.
b) Worship is not a reflection of what you feel.
- Emotions are also part of worshipping the Lord, but is should not be
our primary driving factor. We must know what we are doing.
- Worship according to Jesus, it should be done in Spirit and in truth.
c) Worship is not just a routine or rhetoric (meaningless expressions)
- It is not just a word written in the program in the church.
- Now a days the word worship is like a cliché in the church, it
underrated, it became meaningless words. Nobody knows what they
mean anymore. They are used as bullets in a form of verbal activities,
not as honest descriptions.
d) Worship is not something done solely by Christians or "spiritual"
people.
- We often misunderstood worship is for those who only go to the church
or for those who are truly mature in their faith.
- We as a child of God, we are welcome to His presence. He loves to
see us being in His presence worshipping Him.
e) Worship is not merely a style of music.
- Worship is not merely a style of music. There is no such thing, because
what matters to God is the condition of our hearts while we are
worshipping Him.
f) Worship is not something that is bound with time and place.
g) Worship is not something that is bound with any denominational or
cultural structure.
h) Worship is not something that has a beginning and has an end.
- Worship is an eternal occupation of all God’s creation. From the
spiritual realm to the earthly realm to eternity.
- It has no beginning and has no end, for the object of our Worship is
also a divine being whose worship and praise never ends.
- Isaiah 40:28
“The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth.
He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable.”
II. Worship for all its worth
 So now let us understand what’s the meaning of true worship. For it is the
desire of God for us to do.
 “But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the
Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him.” John
4: 23
 Let us first define what worhip is?
 The true meaning and reflection of worship is that Worship is Acknowledging
God with a grateful heart for who he is and what he has done.
 So let us now understand what the Bible is saying about True Worship, for
this is the kind of Worship the Father seeks.
 Romans 12: 1 – 2
“12 Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to
offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your
true and proper worship. 2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be
transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and
approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”
 According to these verses we our worship must be four important things.
1. Worship is our response to who God is.
- “Great is the LORD and most worthy of praise; his greatness no one
can fathom.” Psalm 145: 3
- 1 Chronicles 29:11
“Yours, O Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the
victory and the majesty, indeed everything that is in the heavens and
the earth; Yours is the dominion, O Lord, and You exalt Yourself as
head overall.”
- Our God is so great, He is so great that even the word “great” is not fit
to describe him.
2. Worship is our act of gratitude to God’s mercy.
- It say, “in view of God’s mercy.” In verse 1
- Psalms 9:1-2 (NLT) I will praise you, Lord, with all my heart; I will tell of
all the marvelous things You have done. 2 I will be filled with joy
because of You. I will sing praises to Your name, O Most High.”
3. Worship is our act of obedience to God’s will.
- “Do not conform to the pattern of this world but be transformed by the
renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what
God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.” (v. 2)
- Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, for we are no
longer of this world. We must conform to what God wants us to do and
to desire His will alone.
- So as we worship God, we must desire what He wants in our worship
of Him, and that is our heart of worship.
III. Conclusion
 Let us not assume that what we are doing in the church is what God already
wants.
 Let us not assume that every Sunday after the Worship service, that we if we
attended the service, we already fulfill what is needed to fulfill, we already
offer the sacrifices that God requires of us, no!
 Always remember, “Obedience is better than sacrifice.”
 As we worship, our hearts must be in humble obedience to God, desiring only
what pleases Him, and what pleases God, an offering of our lives to Him and
for Him alone, living a life of humble obedience to God.
