In 1917, a young Irish priest named Father Edward J. Flanagan grew discouraged
in his work with homeless men in Omaha, Nebraska. He shifted his attention and
in December of that year, borrowed $90 to pay the rent on a boarding house that
became Father Flanagan’s Home for Boys. Flanagan welcomed all boys,
regardless of their race or religion. By the spring, 100 boys were living at the
Home.

Precancels.
The title came from the motto for Boys Town, a community formed in 1917 by a Catholic
priest
named Father Edward Flanagan. Located in Omaha, Nebraska, it was a place where
troubled or
homeless boys could come for help. In 1941, Father Flanagan was looking at a magazine
called The
Messenger when he came across a drawing of a boy carrying a younger boy on his back,
with the
caption, "He ain't heavy Mr., he's my brother." Father Flanagan thought the image and
phrase
captured the spirit of Boys Town, so he got permission and commissioned a statue of the
drawing
with the inscription, "He ain't heavy Father, he's my brother." The statue and phrase
Girls And
Boys Town. The logo was updated with a drawing of a girl carrying a younger girl added.
In the Guardian newspaper of February 24, 2006, Hollies guitarist Tony Hicks said: "In
the 1960s
when we were short of songs I used to root around publishers in Denmark Street. One
afternoon, I'd
been there ages and wanted to get going but this bloke said: 'Well there's one more song.
It's
probably not for you.' He played me the demo by the writers [Bobby Scott and Bob
Russell]. It
sounded like a 45rpm record played at 33rpm, the singer was slurring, like he was drunk.
But it had
something about it. There were frowns when I took it to the band but we speeded it up
and added an
orchestra. The only things left recognizable were the lyrics. There'd been this old film
called Boys
Town about a children's home in America, and the statue outside showed a child being
carried aloft
and the motto He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother. Bob Russell had been dying of cancer
while
writing. We never got, or asked for, royalties. Elton John - who was still called Reg -
played piano
on it and got paid 12 pounds. It was a worldwide hit twice." (thanks, Edward Pearce -

Perhaps we can entice Zuzu to return by showing some
additional Nebraska items. Here is the seal issued by Boy's
Town in 1949 -- there were three varieties. (Mosbaugh 22.2Bx)

Seals are another of my collecting habits, and I have a huge selection of Christmas and TB
seals - many 100's still to sort. Once I get round to it I will scan and post some here.

I put this scan thru the retro-reveal website and the postmark is GRENADA with a date of DE
10 1929. Wonder how this stamp got down to Grenada near South America.

Rather than put a cover in the Christmas covers thread, I will make this is my Christmas post for
today.
from the marketing dept. I especially like the admonition on the back of each sheet to not be
taken in by look-a-likes from other institutions. Also, the statement on the back cover, "Our
savings account paid for these stamps." How is that for laying on a little guilt?
Don't get me wrong, though, I think Boys Town is a fine organization that has helped
multitudinous boys and, now girls as well, and a worthy charity, in my opinion. Plus, it has a
stamp sales department of long-standing. The Boys Town stamp department even had a booth at
the APS stamp show in Omaha last summer. If you ever get to Omaha, its well worth the time
to take a tour of Boys Town.

Cinderella stamps
Boys Town, Nebraska. No date yet for this but possibly 1999 based on the cancellation.
Issued as a pane of 10, 3 panes per booklet.

Would you explain how it follows that a Boys Town presence in 11 states in 1996 goes to a
presence in 18 states by 1999. I'm not seeing the reasoning here.

Don,
1999 was the postmark year suggested by cindycan2 as being "possible" in his
previous post. My belief was that Boys Town's presence nationwide would
increase, rather than decrease, so that meant, to me, that the sheet was issued
after 1996. However, that assumption may not prove to be valid. My use of the
Woodbridge, Virginia, USA phrase "likely 1999" was a bad choice -- I should have simply stated that the
Posts: 5,661 sheet was "likely issued after 1996."

I've taken a closer look at some of the Father Flanagan's Boys Home booklets found in a
cindycan2 recent cinderella collection I purchased.

The stamps and the booklet cover from 1996 are dated. The inside back cover of the
booklet has a phone number, but no printer's number. An inscription printed on the gum
side of the seals indicates that Boys Town is in 11 states + DC.

Canada Cinderella

There is an undated booklet with almost the identical cover as the 1996. The printer's
number on the inside back cover is 9712c/sls (suggesting it was issued in 1997?). An
inscription printed on the gum side of the seals indicates that Boys Town is in 11 states +
DC.
Another undated booklet has a printer's number on the inside back cover of 9812c/sls
(suggesting it was issued in 1998?). An inscription printed on the gum side of the seals
indicates that Boys Town is in 11 states + DC.
Then there is the booklet containing the seal with the Christmas bells. The printer's
number on the inside back cover is 9912c/sls (suggesting it was issued in 1999?). The
inscription about Boys Town in 18 states is now on the inside front cover. And there is
now a website for Boys Town, suggesting that this booklet was printed after the three other
ones mentioned here.
Finally, I did a quick search of a USA newspaper archive and found several articles about
Boys Town from 2000 mentioning that they were now in 18 states. So all evidence points
to that little Christmas seal dating to 1999.
