Objectives:
1. Identify what is Grammar
Translation Method.

2. Explain and Analyze the

characteristics of Grammar
Translation Method

3. Distinguish the different

principles of Grammar Translation
Method.
What is Grammar
Translation Method?
Grammar Translation Method is a method of
teaching foreign languages derived from the
classical (sometimes called traditional) method
of teaching dead languages like Greek and
Latin. In grammar-translation classes,
students learn grammatical rules and then
apply those rules by translating sentences
between the target
language (L2) and the native language(L1).
Grammar Translation
Method History
Back in the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries, studying a
foreign language was connected with learning Latin
and Greek. At that period, it was critical to
concentrate on grammatical rules, syntactic
structures, vocabulary memorization, and literary
text translation. On the other hand, students didn’t
really practice oral communication. After all, Latin
and Greek were definitely taught not for oral
communication.
Grammar Translation
Method History
Late in the nineteenth century, the Classical
Method also became known as the Grammar
Translation Method but didn’t really move
forward from translating literary text from
Language 2 to Language 1 through the
application of the rules that were being
thoroughly studied.

TAKE NOTE!
It’s important to note that the Grammar-
Translation Method has received criticism for its
limited focus on practical communication skills
and its overemphasis on written language.
Modern language teaching approaches tend to
emphasize communication, immersion, and the
development of practical language skills for real-
life situations.

Principles of GTM
Grammar Translation Method is
a way of studying a language.
Reading and writing are major
focus.
Vocabulary based on reading is
taught through a bilingual
language word list, dictionary,
and memorization.
Principles of GTM
Much of the lesson is devoted to
translating sentences into and
out of the L2.
Grammar is taught deductively.
The L1 is the medium of
instructions.
