● Recall that composition refers to the


arrangement of elements in an image
● We are going to go over 10 of the most
common composition techniques that
help enhance an image
Rule of Thirds
● The image is divided into a gid of 9
equal parts with key elements
placed along the lines of at their
intersections.
● Helps to create balance in
composition
● Many programs and cameras offer
grids to impose the rule of thirds to
help find good composition
Balance

● Achieving equilibrium by distributing


elements within the frame
● Balance can be symmetrical or
asymmetrical
Leading Lines

● Using lines or shapes within image to


guide viewer’s eye toward a specific focal
point or throughout composition
Symmetry and Patterns

● Creating a sense of order and harmony by


featuring symmetrical or repetitive
patterns.
Framing

● Using natural or man-made


elements to frame the main
subject, drawing attention
to the focal point and
adding depth to
composition
Depth

● Incorporating elements in foreground,


middleground, and background to create
a sense of depth and dimension in a
two-dimensional image
Contrast

● Emphasizing differences in
colour, tone, texture, or size
to create visual interest and
highlight specific elements
Simplicity

● Avoiding unnecessary
clutter and focusing on the
essential elements to create
a clean, impactful
composition
Perspective

● Choosing angles and viewpoint that add a


unique and dynamic perspective to the
image.
Colour and Tone

● Considering the use of color and tonal


contrasts to evoke specific moods or
emphasize certain aspects of the
composition.
