As his name suggests, Nasir ad-Din Tusi was born in Tus (also
Ghazali’s hometown) on February 17, 1201. His true sectarian
identity has been much debated. In his autobiography-cum-doctrinal
treatise, Sayr wa Suluk, Tusi defends his Isma‘ili beliefs by
explaining that his family followed the exoteric aspects of the shari‘a,
which prompted him to search for more mystical and esoteric
understandings of Islam.41 Some scholars believe he was Isma‘ili to
begin with because in this biography, he discusses coming out as
Isma‘ili and declaring his true feelings about his faith, as if emerging
from taqiyya—which is concealing one’s sectarian identity for the
sake of one’s safety.42 However, according to Tusi scholar S. J.
Badakhchani, such an explanation does not account for his
discussion of his transformation in deliberately choosing Isma‘ili
ideas.43 Wilfred Madelung suggests that Tusi converted to Isma‘ilism
on philosophical grounds.44 Meanwhile, some Imami Shi‘i historians
have dismissed his association with Isma‘ilis, and others claim that
his conversion to Isma‘ilism was only temporary.45
Early in Tusi’s career, after reading a compilation of sermons and
essays by a Nizari Isma‘ili imam named Hasan ‘Ala Dhikrihi al-Salam
(d. 1166), the young polymath became convinced of the need to
learn the inner meanings of the Shari’a through a teacher and, more
specifically, a living imam. Tusi pleaded with the Isma‘ili governor of
Quhistan to join the Isma‘ili community, but he was unsuccessful.
Finally, after 1224, during the rule of the next leader (muhtashim) of
the Quhistani Nizaris, a man named Nasir ad-Din ‘Abd al-Rahim,
young Tusi was admitted as a novice (mustajib).46 He entered into
service at the muhtashim’s court and wrote several treatises on a

Strange to say, Henry Fletcher, brother of Lord Salton, and
Lieutenant-colonel Hume, for the interest of his majesty’s forces,
raised a prosecution against the three Glasgow citizens for murder. It
