Plan & Design Tuff Vs First Coat
Plan & Design Tuff Vs First Coat
Date: 01/23
Problem Statement
Tuff and First coat are two brands of anti rust paints. You are required to plan
and design an experiment to determine which of these paints is more efficient in
protecting iron against rusting.
Hypothesis
Tuff is the better Anti-Rusting agent . Using Tuff, there should be a smaller
increase in mass due to rusting than using the first coat.
Aim
To determine the increase of mass of the iron strip via mass difference
Apparatus Materials
Iron strip Tuff
Beaker First Coat
Petri Dish Water
Brush
Introduction
Method
1. Hold the iron tongs and dip the strip into the can of tuff
2. Let the strips dry
3. Weigh and record the mass of the strips
4. Plae the strip in water
5. Leave the strip submerged for 2 weeks
6. Remove the strip from the water and air dry for 1 week
7. Weigh and record the new mass of the strip
8. Repeat the process using First Coat
The strips of iron were coated with tongs, and were put to dry. The strips were
weighed, and 50cm3 of water was poured into a beaker. The strip was placed,
partially submerged, in the water. The strip was submerged for 4 weeks. After 4
weeks passed, the strip was air dried for a week. After the week had passed, the
strip was weighed. The process was repeated for the second strip.
Variables
Constant
The length of the strip
The volume of the water
Manipulated
Brands of paint
Responding
Mass of iron strip after rusting
Data Collection
Before Weight
After Weight
Tough
First Coat
Expected Results
The strip that had tough applied to it will show a smaller increase in mass than
the strip with first coat, indicating tough is the better AR agent
Data Treatment
Mass of rust formed = mass of coated iron strip after rusting - mass of coated iron
strip before rusting
Discussion
Source of error: Dipping will cause some of the iron strip to be untouched,
influencing the final weight.
