Negotiating technique: Big plot and Bluff

List of Demand
 The bargaining unit has set agreement for a three-year term with an adequate
protection against inflation for 5% wage increase in first two years and 6%
wage increase in the third year.
 Another shorter agreement that the union has agreed upon is a two-year
agreement with a 4% increase in wages in the first year and 5% increase in
wages in the second year.
Summary
As we enter into a new agreement, the workers of local 1 of the Gaming employees
union have felt the need for a wage increase in the new agreement. The bargaining
unit has set agreement for a three-year term with an adequate protection against
inflation for 5% wage increase in first two years and 6% wage increase in the third
year. The workers feel this would be the best deal as this is the time to invest in the
first-class workforce already trained and developed to retain these top-notch
employees for three years. The bargaining unit has had several complaints about the
higher salaries of competitors and wage catch up with the current rise in taxes and
price of necessities which has led workers face chronic financial problems. Another
shorter agreement that the union has agreed upon is a two-year agreement with a
4% increase in wages in the first year and 5% increase in wages in the second year.
The financial reports of the company in previous year suggests that the two
proposed agreements would not affect the company’s economic condition much. The
frustrated union members have already started deciding the date for a strike vote
and it is anticipated that the bargaining unit will vote in favour of a strike if these
conditions are not met. This strike can demotivate the under paid workers and pose
serious economic losses to the Casino if the union votes for a strike. Thus, it is the
final demand of the bargaining unit to the employer to agree to this negotiation as it
is a win-win situation based on the facts surrounding the economic and social
environment.
