In this project may help to understand the concept of milk dairy products and aim is find out consumer
perception towards Nandini milk and their quality of milk product and this project is carried out in Belagavi
milk union which is the part of the Karnataka milk federation(KMF). KMF has 13 milk unions and B.M.U.
is one among 13 unions the project help to study the practice of short term requirements by B.M.U is one
among 13 unions. The project helps to study practice of short term requirements by B.M.U in past years and
to calculate management performance in the past five years

1.1: Organization Profile

Now a day’s dairy facing so much competition in the market. The market is flooded with Indian and
multinational company and all the products of the companies having good quality. so we do not have clear
what retailer felt about the various dairy products and also we cannot predict the feature demand in retailer
towards the product we are not aware of the attitudes of the retailer towards the various dairy companies and
particular towards Bemul and we also don’t know how retailers are getting satisfies from BEMUL It was a
great experience to undergo a summer internship project on Nandini organization study during the study I
tried my best to know the various department of the company from production to the marketing of milk

In this report I tries to know retailers perception towards Nandini milk which may help the marketing
department of the company as well as to the company the study focused on how exactly consumer are
satisfied with Nandini milk BEMUL was established in the year of 1986 and started functioning is 1988. It
basically processor milk from many villages on daily basis and then process many products like ghee butter
Peda and pannier etc.

Primary data has been collected by interacting with retailers and collected data through questionnaire the
secondary data was collected with the help of fact sheets organizational manuals and website of KMF and
BEMUL the study report consists of industrial profile which gives a brief overview about dairy industries
company profile which gives a brief about current organization status different products they are offering
then the research methodology which include statement of the problem objective of the study
methodological assumptions, limitation of the study analysis and interpretation of data the has been collected

the federation and also manages the marketing milk and milk product outside the state. It manages surplus
and deficiencies of liquid milk along the milk union and development of superior manager personal
acquiring and applying all recent technologies prescribing qualities guidance and norms provides balance

1.2:Industrial Profile

Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) is the largest Cooperative Dairy Federation in South India, owned and
managed by milk producers of Karnataka State. KMF has over 2.30 million milk producers in over 12993
Dairy Cooperative Societies at village level, functioning under 14 District Cooperative Milk Unions in
Karnataka State. The mission of the Federation is to usher rural prosperity through dairy development.
During the last four decades of Cooperative Dairy Development by KMF, the dairy industry in Karnataka
has progressed from a situation of milk-scarcity to that of milk-surplus.tries

PROCESSING OF MILK IN THE FACTORY This unit processes 70-80 thousand litters
of milk every day. All the milk that gets processed are come from Dharwad district, an hour’s drive from
Belagavi. The pasteurized milk is stored in the milk storage tank. The pasteurized milk is then led into the
sterilization unit through pipelines. This unit consists of a homogenizer which maintains the milk at 137
degree Celsius for 4 seconds. The sterilized milk which is now all set to be packed is sent to primary
packaging unit through feed pipes. This production unit is mainly concerned with production of 100, 200
and 500 ml packets of slim and toned milk. The slim variant has zero fat while the latter has a trans-fat of
3.5%. Separate machineries are used for production of different quantities of milk packet. The tetra pack into
which the milk is filled has 4 layers. Polyethylene is being used for the innermost and outermost layer while
aluminium and paper board being used for the middle layers. A sensor based tagging machine prints the
MFD on the packets and this marks the primary packaging process. All the tagged packets are sent to
secondary packaging unit through a conveyor belt where all the packets are put into the carton boxes. They
undergo strict inspection and are quality checked on various parameters like acidity, CLR, and packaging
integrity. The quality checked products are dispatched to TAMIL NADU GOA AND ANDHARA

The dairy cooperative movement has been central to development of daring in India

1.4 :Various schemes &incentives government of India

1. National program for dairy development (NPDD) - the NPDD focuses on creating and
strengthening of infrastructure of production of quality milk, procurement production and marketing
of milk & milk product by the state agencies like state cooperative dairy federation and district
cooperative milk products union. The programme has achieved most of its desired goals of increasing
milk production has grown at more than 6% in the past five years
2. Dairy entrepreneur development scheme(DEDS)- Launched in 2010, dairy entrepreneurship
development scheme (DEDS) is being implemented through national bank for agriculture and rural
development (NABARD) which provides cooperative urban and rural banks with back-ended
subsidy of 25%of the project cost of beneficiary of general category and 33.33% of the project cost
to scheduled caste & schedule tribes category of purchases of milch cattel with unit size from 2 to 10
beneficiary
3. Animal husbandry infrastructure development fund (AHIDF)- as part of Atma nirbhar bharat
abhiyan stimulus package announced by prime minister narendra modi the government has approved
setting up of animal husbandry infrastructure development fund (AHIDF) worth 15.000 crore. This is
for the first time the government has announced a specific fund for the private sector in expending
dairy and [processing infrastructure in the country AHIDF would facilitate incentivisation of
investment in establishment of infrastructure for dairy and meat processing and value addition
infrastructure and establishment of animals feed plants in the private sector

Organization profile at Belgaum District is North Western Border District of Karnataka, 512 km away from
Bangalore a capital city of Karnataka and it is on the border of Maharashtra and Goa States. The
geographical area of Belgaum District is 13415 Sq. km with an 1138 inhabited villages. The rain fall in a
District is 594.90 mm. Belgaum is specially known for production of Kunda.

2.1: KARNATAK CO-OPERATIVE MILK PRODUCERS’ FEDERATION LIMITED

KMF is the apex body in Karnataka representing dairy co-operatives.it is the third largest dairy co-operative
amongst the dairy co-operative in the country.to impart training institute at bang lore and regional training
institute at Dharwad and Kalburgi (Gulbarga) are functioning. Three nitrogen plants (2 plants of 25CPMand
1 plants of 5 CPM) are been set-up to supply nitrogen, which used for refrigeration purpose. Three
diagnostic centres have been set up for monitoring diseases three fodder farms at rajkunte,kuttanahalli and
kodagu have been set up supply good quality fooder and seed production farm at shaper has been set-up.the

KMF is a co-operative apex body in the state of Karnataka for representing dairy organization and
implementing dairy development activities to achieve the following objectives

 Providing assured and remunerative market for all the milk produced by the farmer members
 Providing hygienic milk to urban consumers.

The first of the dairy co- operative that make up KMF started in 1955 in kudige kodagu district Belagavi
milk union limited (BEMUL) is function in the milk rich district of Belgaum in Karnataka its milk shed area
include the whole district in BGM the government of Karnataka established the Belgaum dairy in the 1966
with a capacity of 10 LTPP (litter ton per day) and procurement of 3000 kgs per day. In 1985 is become as
part of the area in which the operation fload 3 was implemented under this new dairy capacity of 60 LTPD
was established at the cost 5.82 crore a chilling center with a capacity of 20 LTPD was also established as a
part of this schema

initiatives have been implemented at all the stage of procurement processing and marketing. Among these
CMP initiatives noteworthy initiatives is the setting up of community milking parlors in villages.
The KMF is forerunner to introduce this innovative technological initiatives for bringing
about revolutionary in improvement in quality of milk collected in DCSs. this system several advantages

The store department in BEMUL follows the Comdex system (coded control system). A card is mentioned
for each item and a number is allotted. The card is attached to each article consist of amount of balance, date
of issue, purchases etc. This is the later recorded in separate ledger book. The inventories are of different
inventories. It deals with the purchases and sale of cattle feed fodder etc.

In BEMUL, at every stage care is taken to ensure that the customer gets the products which have a high
quality where testing is done. There is separate laboratory for this. Quality controls are very essential as to
main ton the freshness of the products. All the container, pipes and other equipment’s are washed with hot
water before starting off with the new production. There are many test on conducted here the packed milk
we get from chilling center next before standardization and the last test before packing. The head of the
quality control department is held responsible for overall supervision of quality aspects of milk procured,

The plants operate at a contract demand of 650 KWA factors of 0.95 achieved by capacitor action. The

viii. Feature growth and prospectus

Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF), the second-largest milk co-operative after Amul and which manufactures
and retails its products under the Nandini brand, has announced plans to penetrate new markets and enhance
milk procurement by over 20% in six months to meet the projected demand.

The company has chalked out plans to increase the milk output to 1 crore litres per day,a top official said n
consultation with our chairman, we have decided to increase procurement of milk to 1 crore litres per day
within six months, from 80,000 lakh litres per day. We will do this by getting more co-operatives under our
fold and increasing the number of cows our farmers have,” B.C. Sateesh, managing director, KMF, said in
an interview. He said KMF, which was focussing on value-added milk products for better yields, was
planning to supply these products all over India in the next 18 months. “Currently, except for four States, we
are present everywhere. Our aim is to cover the whole of India and we are doing it,” he said KMF is also
laying emphasis on exports. After finding success in the Singapore market, KMF has initiated talks with
suppliers in West Asia to export cow ghee, which is in demand there.“The UAE market is very promising
and we will start exports to that country shortly. It is a ₹300-crore market for ghee and we expect good
response,” Mr. Sateesh said. Currently the company has 100 types of products in its portfolio which will be
introduced in different markets in phases, he said.

KMF is increasing its presence in Maharashtra and is close to acquiring a dairy plant.
Negotiations are on with three companies and an announcement is imminent. “I have visited facilities in
Panvel near Mumbai and Goa. I am going to see a facility in Pune. We will be announcing the acquisition
soon. There is also proposal for contract manufacturing,” he said. After successfully introducing Nandini
branded milk and milk products in Maharashtra, mainly Mumbai, about three years ago, KMF has now
introduced Nandini cheese. Initially it will focus on the institutional market of Mumbai which comprises
hotels, restaurants, cafés and B2B sector. It is targeting a 20% market share of cheese of this institutional
segment in Mumbai within two years, top executives said. KMF, which has a turnover of over ₹15,000
crore, is eyeing ₹25,000 crore in sales over years. Having invested ₹2,000 crore in building plant and
infrastructure, KMF will now invest ₹100 crore every year on both green field and brown field expansion
within Karnataka and elsewhere, officials said. “Nandini’s cheese manufacturing plant is spread across 45
acres and has come with an investment of ₹600 crore. We expect to capture major chunk of institutional
cheese market in Maharashtra,” M.T. Kulkarni, marketing director, KMF, said. “KMFcheese plant has a
capacity 40 metric tonnes per day, which can be increased by ten-fold,” he said.

offer great quality of milk when comapre to others.

BARGANING POWER OF SUPPLIER – Dairy farmer are the key supplier that supply milk. The barganing
power of supplier in the dairy industry is fairly high.

RIVERALY AMONG EXISTING COMPETITORS – The major competitor in organized sector is amul and
in unorganized sector is the milk man. Since the product are of international quality and government
undertaking enjoys benefits or the competative advantages over other player

SWOT analysis is the analysis where the strengths weakness opportunities and threads of the company,
strength and weakness are the internal of the company. It can be controlled by the company, where
opportunities and thrts are the external of the company, which cannot be controlled by the company

Strengths

 Nanadi enjoy good brand image. Belagavi milk union is one if the leading producer of milk products
& it has wide area of market, nandini is a trusted house hold brand name, more than 2 lakhs farmers
members were supplying milk
 It has large procurement system
 Huge infrastructure for processing
 Competitive price for all products
 Wide distribution network leads to regular and timely supply
 Provide excellent veterinary, vaccination, extension facilities feeds and fodder seeds supply ECT. In
the field which cannot be thought off by any private operator. Hence earned lot of goodwill from the
member producers, who patronize the union trough out of the year.
 Has earned the distribution of not failing to deliver the milk to market on time through the year.
There are days with no power supply no water supply but there is no day without nandini milk supply
 BEMUL is giving highly remunerative and timely payment to producers and &this has good on
suppliers and made union to be in good financial position
 Iso 9001-2000 certificate (International organization for standardisation)
 Good institutional support from KMF, NDDB, by giving financial support and guidance to the
BEMUL. BEMUL is equipped with fully automatic systems which ensure total quality maintenance.

 No authority over issues like, commission offered volume discount etc.


 Lack of professional manpower. In BELAGAVI MILK UNION LTD department heads are not based
on qualification
 Lacking quality consistency because of seasonal changes preferring buffalo milk may get attracted to
other brands
 Some private dairies are selling homogenized milk, which apparels rich the union cannot
hpomogenize all its huge quality of milk due to lack of homogenizing capacity and increases in
processing cost,
 BEMUL Company should distribute their product directly to seller without keeping a middlemen and
agents because part of profit is divided between middlemen and agents. About 65-0% of marketing is
done directly the rest of 35-40% is done using middle men.

Opportunities

 There is a phenomenal scope for innovation is product development packing and presentation.
 Steps to takes to introduce value added products like shrikhands, ice-creams paneer,khoa, floared
milk, dairy sweets ECT.this will lead to of brand building
 Yet another aspect can be addition of infect foods and nationals.
 Increasing market demand for milk and milk products

 There is scope for developing in unexplored areas for milk processing as nandini can extend its
equity of brand

In the Belagavi milk union is one of the best milk union in Belagavi city and I enjoy lot because each
department support me specially in the marketing department and purchases department member explain
entire their work model apart from this department store, production and account and finished goods
department staff are also guide me how to make the report and where I mistake and that mistake how to
improve it they are teach me like friends. However the belagavi milk union is continuous process never take
stop and each department is the same ownership pattern and the quality of product is very good so that ‘why
the nandini milk means kmf has secured 2 nd position in the entire country and 1st position secured Amul

Nandini milk industry’s HR department has successfully implemented roubust incident management
and loss presentation measures. Through training, drills and safety protocols, they have created a cultural of
safety awareness among employee. In the collection of milk and checking and testing of the milk process
can be done through systematically and milk and milk related products prices are set by the KMF not
BEMUL and nandini all products are not manufacturing in bemul only limited products and milk can be
manufactured here and rest of the milk related product comes from the other unions like Hassan milk union
Tumakuru milk union vijayapura milk union etc.

The BEMUL testing lab is very advanced level within the short period the quality of milk is tested and
machinery is also very fast without and break the machinery can be continued process suppose by mistake
the machinery is not worked properly on that time production process is stopped in that time the BEMUL
stored milk can be released in bemul milk maximum storage capacity is 2-3 days not more than this day’s in
the Bemul staff are continued work for supplying milk within time and I observed that each worker and
potentially do their job without any bias there are mainly three types of worker are there in bemul the
following are

Higher level staff


Middle level staff
Lower level staff

Especially I thank you for bemul staff member who are supporting and guiding and encouraging me
to completion of this one month internship program and also thank you Prof Basavaraj kudachimath sir.
