A Christmas Carol – AP Analysis 3 - Figurative Language

AP English Lit
Date:

A Christmas Carol is an ideal novel to practice the skills required for AP Literature and
Composition.

Our assessment for A Christmas Carol will be in parts. This can be one very long paragraph or
broken into multiple paragraphs as a short essay.

3. Figurative Language – In this set of paragraphs, you will explore the extended use of
figurative devices. Use quotations for each of these.

 From Stave II – Explain the figurative meaning of the Cap that the spirit wears. You
MUST include the end of the Stave when the spirit exits. Explain what the method of exit
means.
 From Stave III – Explain the “children under the spirit’s robe.” Ignorance and Want.
Want is easy to explain; use the greater context of the novel (you can consider all of
Dickens’ works). Ignorance is more difficult; create your own understanding of what
ignorance relates to.
 From Stave IV – Explain the symbolic meaning of the appearance of the spirit. You
might consider how the spirit looked in the movie or a similar, traditional Halloween
character for guidance. How does this symbolic representation embody the Theme of
Stave IV (you must name a theme or topic for the Stave)?
