CBME 1 (Operations Management & Total Quality Management)

Activity 1 (Finals)

Name: Course/Section:

1. What is Design for Quality?

-Design for quality (DFQ) refers to the type of integrated product and process
development (IPPD) that focuses on quality. Product development and improvement as
well as system enhancement are the main focus of DFQ in order to maintain and retire
the totality of the product. Simply, DFQ is intended to improve the quality of the
products or services that will give rise to customer satisfaction.

2. Explain the following Design tools to guide the product design stage:
1.) Design for Manufacturing - is the process of designing parts, components, or products to
make them easier to manufacture, with the goal of producing a better product for less
money through simplifying product design. During DFM, five principles such as process,
design material, environment, compliance/testing are evaluated.

2.) Critical to Quality - Critical to quality (CTQ) refers to a product's or service's quality in the
eyes of the customer's voice. It is really necessary to figure out what the most significant
quality characteristics are in terms of what the consumer cares about. This can be
determined through the customer’s feedback.

3.) Design to Cost - Design-to-cost (DTC) is the strategy used to control the cost of the product
development and cost of production/manufacturing. DTC points out that the costs are part
of the product from the very beginning of the concept development and it does not suggest
that the product will precisely attain a described value, rather, it's far about "thinking about
value as the basis for the product enhancement.

4.) Failure Modes and Effects Analysis – is one of the common process analysis tools that
utilizes a step-by-step method in order to figure out all possible failures in a product or
service design as well as in the production. The main goal of FMEA is to eradicate or lessen
the failure or defects that might occur in the process of the product design. Failure
3. What is the importance of Quality in the products?
