AGELESS
PREPARED FOR A
LONGER RETIREMENT?
THE EXPERIMENT THAT
GOT COUPLES TALKING.

We’re living longer, which is great. But it means we could be underestimating how much
money we’ll need in retirement. The bigger concern? Most of us aren’t talking about it.

So we invited couples to guess how much money they’ll need in retirement using our
interactive walkway. It turned out that most couples weren’t on the same page and fell
short of the average length of retirement. They walked away from our experiment with
an important new perspective—because we’re living longer, we need to start planning for
longer. A good place to start? Planning for income that lasts all our years in retirement.

new looks for

a new year
Did you make New Year’s resolutions this year? I did, and I’ll
tell you a secret: I always make mine very easy to achieve.
Last year I had a really good one: to spend loose change.
You laugh, but I got so tired of seeing the big ugly jug of
unpocketed change in my hall closet that I made a habit of
paying for anything that was less than five bucks (a cup of
coffee, a birthday card) with change. And I didn’t peter out
on this resolution by February. I stuck with it all year, and
that felt pretty good. Little goal, big success!
For 2018 one of my decorating goals/resolutions is to
treat my rooms to a star accessory more often. You know
how a cool piece of jewelry can take an outfit from good to
great? The same is true for adding a new killer lamp, pillow,
or piece of art to a space. Get ready: There are lots of top-
notch accessories to shop for on the following pages.
What else is new in this issue? New styling tricks for
your old furniture (page 35), new ways to organize your
closet (page 115), a new look for our popular “How Bad Is
It?” column (page 63), and new wallpaper for my editor’s
page—I’ll feature a different paper every month. (At the
mag, we’re all obsessed with wallpaper right now; you can
suddenly find more fun colorways and patterns than ever.)
Wallpaper always makes a room feel special and more
pulled together. I’m thinking about hanging some on one of
my bedroom walls. I wonder how many rolls of quarters it
takes to buy four rolls of wallpaper? WALLPAPER

Some furniture has a history that can’t be bought, which is why when
you own a piece with good bones and sentimental value, it’s worth
recovering rather than replacing. And when you’re ready to refresh,
turn to Calico to breathe new life into your piece.

The gold wood

When it was time for Maryal and her husband,

in the
living room

It fits right in with a funky mix. “I wanted a cool rug

to act as a backdrop for my colorful wall prints and
mismatched pillows,” says Meredith Alexander, owner
of this bungalow in Santa Monica, CA. Thick stripes look
definitively hip—but they don’t steal attention from the
other eclectic action in the room. There’s a nice texture
combo happening here too: a flat-weave wool rug plus a
distressed brown leather sofa plus a plush gray velvet chair.
50 HGTV Magazine
It can be layered. Most
designers reach for sisal
when they’re looking
for a base to show off a
patterned rug, but the
Stockholm’s stripes do the
job even better. Neutral
yet not boring black-
and-white makes floral,
Persian, and ikat designs
really stand out, as in this
Craftsman-style house
in Buffalo, NY. Blogger
Mallory Nikolaus, who
writes at Classy Clutter,
paired her IKEA rug with
a low-pile Moroccan style:
“It helps both lie flat and
stay put,” she says.

It has that timeless

OPPOSITE PAGE: LISA ROMEREIN; THIS PAGE, FROM TOP: MALLORY NIKOLAUS; DAVID TSAY

chicness. “I probably
own close to 20 black-
and-white T-shirts—they
are always sophisticated
and never go out of style,
and the same goes for
this rug,” says designer
Amber Lewis. She’s used
it in clients’ homes, and
unhesitatingly chose it
for the living room of
her West Hills, CA, ranch.
“The Stockholm is great
in a high-low mix,” she
says. (It’s paired here
with a splurgy custom
slipcovered sofa.) “Nobody
ever believes it’s so
inexpensive.”

HGTV Magazine 51
in the
dining area

It freshens up farmhouse style. Surrounding a distressed

table with sleek metal chairs is a classic move. Place them
on the wrong rug, though, and they look like items in a yard
sale. Going with a crisp graphic pattern, as the owners of
this 1910 home in Sweden did, gives a country table and
lighting fixtures an urban twist.

52 HGTV Magazine
fun decorating

It can take on a retro

vibe. Designer Erin
Kestenbaum wanted a
rug for the dining room
of her 1940s Colonial in
Rowayton, CT, that would
complement her trad style.
“This twist on a classic
stripe can look either
modern or vintage,” she
says. Blocky lines are high-
impact enough to stand
up to busy fabrics—like
the diamond print on the
caned chairs—but still let
delicate pieces, like the
glass chandelier and brass
étagère, shine.
OPPOSITE PAGE: CECILIA MÖLLER/LIVING4MEDIA; THIS PAGE, FROM TOP: ERIN KESTENBAUM; FELIX FOREST/LIVING INSIDE, STYLING: TAHNEE CARROLL

It super-defines an area.
There’s no dedicated
dining room in the
industrial three-story
apartment where Leah
Taylor and her husband
live, above their home
decor store in Australia.
So she carved one out in
the large open space that
encompasses the kitchen
and living room. “The rug
makes a bold statement,
and I also like how it plays
off the lines of the subway
tiles,” she says.
in the
office

It adds edge to a girly look. How to give pretty pink

mohair wingback chairs, romantic floor-to-ceiling floral
drapes, and an elegant white desk 2018 flair? With a rug
that’s equal parts glam and graphic, which is exactly why
interior designer Alisha Gwen used it in her Pittsburgh
studio. “It’s attractive but has the punch the room needed,”
she says. One unexpected bonus of the flat weave: “My
desk chair, which is on casters, never gets stuck!”
fun decorating

It brings the (unstuffy)

polish. When it came time
to pick a rug for this home
office/computer room in
Denver for a family of four,
designer Erin Iba had a
checklist: First up, it had to
be stylish, since it’s visible
from both the living room
and the kitchen. And it
also had to be playful
and fun. “This one fits the
bill,” she says. Instead of
competing with the room’s
dark teal walls and coral
bookcases, the stripes
leave the space looking
sharp yet welcoming.
OPPOSITE PAGE: ERIN DRUGA; THIS PAGE, FROM TOP: DAVID LAUER; DAVID A. LAND

It goes with any quirky

design idea. After
designer Dayka Robinson
of Stone Mountain, GA,
hired a pro to paint a cool
geometric black-and-
yellow pattern on one
wall of her home office,
she knew just the rug to
go with it. “I like things
that have big impact,” she
says. “Both the pattern on
the wall and the stripes on
the rug are overscale.” She
balanced them out with
white walls, white floors,
and solid curtain panels.

HGTV Magazine 55
fun decorating

in the
bedroom

It’s the rug for a black-and-white color scheme. The

couple who own this cottage-style home in Carlton
Landing, OK, wanted a posh, calming vibe in their
bedroom. Paige Schnell of Tracery Interiors delivered
with a stately black bed, white-and-charcoal linens, and
cream shades, then brought them all together with the
rug. “One element that combines a two-tone palette is all
it needed to feel like the kind of room you’d find in a bed-
and-breakfast,” Schnell says.
It’s cool for a kid’s room.
The rug is not only a
good deal (read: fewer
worries about children
destroying it), its split
stripes also have a fresh,
young vibe. As Olivia
Korenberg of Twofold
LA says, “I love how the
pattern adds energy to a
space.” Which, of course,
fits the 6-year-old boy
who lives in this 1920s
Los Angeles house. “It’s
one of our go-tos for kids’
rooms and playrooms,”
Korenberg says.
OPPOSITE PAGE: JANA CARSON; THIS PAGE, FROM TOP: JENN PABLO; JAZI PHOTO

It’s the perfect pattern-

on-pattern play. Since the
rug’s streamlined design
gives it a tailored look, it
pairs well with more ornate
pieces—like the tapestries
designer Crystal Blackshaw
hung in the bedroom her
daughters share in their
1910 Chicago apartment. “I
saw a designer’s home with
a fancier version of this rug
and searched for it,” says
Blackshaw. “I found options
that were too precious for
children, and was thrilled to
discover this IKEA one.”

A ROOM WITH A
SPECTACULAR VIEW
As you walk in, you’re greeted by a pastel
palette that contrasts with the black and
charcoal exterior. The walls are a soft gray
with ultra-white trim from HGTV HOME™
by Sherwin-Williams, providing a neutral
backdrop to the wall of windows that
makes the most of the breathtaking views.
The furnishings from Wayfair feature a
pair of matching transitional-style white
sofas that form a seating area, along with
a marble-topped coffee table with a black
steel base that complements the modern
fireplace. The accent pieces are inspired by
the Pacific Northwest sunsets, with shades
of sea green, peach, and pink. A massive

features of the home—a playful custom
mural painted like an old tourism billboard.
A low-profile upholstered platform bed,
outfitted with a Sleep Number mattress
and teal bedding, is flanked by two
gray-stained nightstands topped with a
pair of transitional lamps. Everything rests
upon a dark jute rug—a natural texture
perfect for the coastal setting.
The walls, ceiling, and tile in the master
bath are different shades of ultra-white,
which brightens the space and provides
a striking contrast to the dark vanity and
fixtures. An ultra-modern wall-mounted

out as unique features, both in matte black
with matching accessories and all from
Delta Faucet.

A LOWER LEVEL THAT’S A HIGHLIGHT

When you make your way downstairs from the main floor, you arrive
in the light-filled lower level—an area so spacious it’s like having a

a large multipurpose lounge with a Peloton bike facing the windows
that look out at the view of the lush landscaping and water.

WATERFRONT ENTERTAINING AT ITS BEST

The backyard features multiple entertaining areas. At one end is a deck

rectangular table that can accommodate up to 12, depending on how
you configure it. A glass and composite railing ensures your enjoyment

Once the sun sets, you’ll want to warm up by the Belgard® stone fire pit. Tucked into
a corner and surrounded by lush landscaping, the area features six chairs upholstered
in greige outdoor fabric, situated so that each one provides a view of the water.

good question!

how bad is it to

It’s true that some people get addicted to the
slick feel of balm and crave it even if their lips
aren’t chapped, says Melissa Piliang, M.D., a
dermatologist at Cleveland Clinic: “It becomes
compulsive, like hair twirling.” Still, over-
swiping won’t do damage as long as you
don’t OD on “cooling” products with phenol
or menthol, which can be drying if overused.
Lips actually require a fair amount of
moisture; unlike the rest of our skin, they lack
oil glands. “Wind, sun, and cold can break

need nourishing all year long,” says Dr. Piliang.
Look for products containing super-hydrators
like glycerin, shea butter, and coconut oil;
beeswax is good too, as it can help seal in
moisture. The same goes for SPF 15 or 30,
which shields from the sun.

to pour hot liquid
into a glass?
Unless a glass is made to withstand steaming
beverages, you risk breakage from an
effect known as thermal shock. The high
temperature makes the inside of the glass
expand as the room-temp exterior constrains
it, creating stress that could make it crack,
explains John C. Mauro, Ph.D., a professor
of materials science and engineering at The
Pennsylvania State University. Starting with
a cold glass full of ice cubes, like if you’re
preparing iced coffee or tea, can bring even
more temperature trauma. The trick of putting
a metal spoon in the glass will conduct a small
portion of heat away from liquid but won’t
prevent shattering, says Mauro. Double-wall
and borosilicate glass is typically safe for hot
liquids; check the packaging.

how bad is it to throw someone a

surprise party if they didn’t want one?
If a partner, friend, or colleague makes it clear they’re not up for a
surprise party—and not in a coy “Oh, nooo, please don’t!” way that
implies they secretly want one—resist the impulse to forge ahead.
Surprise can be an especially potent feeling, even more so than
other emotions, says Tania Luna, coauthor of Surprise: Embrace
the Unpredictable and Engineer the Unexpected. That’s why
people really like a good surprise and really dislike a bad one.
Of course, you mean well. “Part of the fun for a party-thrower
is living vicariously through the experience,” says Luna.
Still, this is about the guest of honor. Skip the shebang and
delight with an unexpected gift, like coordinating a visit from
a friend who lives out of town.

Hopping into a toasty car has appeal, but it’s
dangerous—and potentially deadly—to leave an
engine running in an enclosed space. “Vehicles
begin emitting powerful toxic gases, like
carbon monoxide, as soon as you start them,”
says Deborah A.P. Hersman, president and CEO
of the National Safety Council. Inhaling them
can lead to nausea, dizziness, and headache,

colorless, and it can spread fast. Risks remain

no matter if the garage door is open. (Heads
up: Leaving a car running in your driveway
could violate idling laws.) Better to be a bit
chilly but safe as you drive off.

public wi-fi?
Beware: “Public Wi-Fi networks are like
a modern Wild West—there’s nothing
protecting your computer or mobile
phone from those who want to steal your
information,” says David Kennedy, founder
of the information security firms TrustedSec
and Binary Defense. As you’re innocently
pecking away in a coffee shop or an airport,
a nearby Bad Guy can break in and stealthily
harvest your information, including passwords
and credit card numbers. That person could
retain access to your device even after you
leave the network. While it’s safer to surf at
places that hand out passwords, your best bet
is to pick up one of those personal mobile hot
spot gadgets. “They generally have the ability
to mitigate direct attacks,” says Kennedy. If
you absolutely must use public Wi-Fi, don’t
do banking or other sensitive work, and avoid
entering login information on sites.

Isadora kept her eye out for a few 1950s pieces,
to give a nod to the decade when the home
was built. She got the side table (for around
$50) and coffee table secondhand. The yellow
gourd lamp from Etsy was also an affordable
find; ditto for the rug from Joss & Main (about
$500). Their one splurge in this space was a
sofa bed by American Leather. Says Isadora, “It
doubles as a guest bed, so I wanted something
really comfortable—no springs poking anyone.”
But the drapes? Target! That yellow chair? IKEA!
And the baby grand piano? Included in the
price of the house!

designer, Isadora Gullov-Singh
constantly found creative ways
to decorate on a dime. “When I
lived in my first apartment, in New York City,
flea markets and thrift shops were how I afforded
furniture,” she says. Her habit of hunting for
old treasures literally led Isadora and her
husband, Arnie, to their current mid-century
home in Oakland, CA. “We were driving in
the neighborhood when we spotted a sign for
an estate sale, which we couldn’t resist,” she
recalls. “But once we got inside, we were more
enthralled with the house than the furniture!”
Although it needed a lot of work, it was a
spacious 3,300 square feet—the first floor had
been a dance studio—with great light. They
snapped it up before it hit the market and
embarked on an eight-month reno that opened
the floor plan and updated the kitchen and
bathrooms. Having spent most of their budget
on construction, Isadora put her money-saving
moves to work with DIY upholstery, secondhand
finds, and IKEA buys that offset a few choice
high-end purchases. “Decorating is a balancing
act,” she says. “Mixing old pieces with new
ones makes a house look and feel like a home.”

“I’ve yet to see another light like this—it’s a

Stylish chrome chairs can cost a small

Rose Bowl Flea Market in L.A., as Isadora did
about 15 years ago. “They were in sad shape,
but I reupholstered the cracked vinyl, and I’ve
re-covered them two more times since,” she
says. This corner of the family room was a dead
zone until the floor-to-ceiling bookcases gave it
purpose and personality. Isadora spotted them
in a CB2 catalog and drove over to buy them
the very next day. The rug is from Joss & Main.

“I don’t like to spend too much on kids’
furniture, because they beat it up,” says
Isadora. Jagger’s nightstand ($80) and desk
were vintage deals. Paying tribute to Arnie’s
English heritage, Isadora took inspiration
from the Union Jack for the color scheme.
The stop sign cost $10 at a salvage yard. For a
headboard, she sewed remnant fabric around
a lumbar pillow and attached it to the wall. She
got the rug from Joss & Main, the red pendant
from One Kings Lane, and the drapes at IKEA.

It only looks pricey! The couple had owned the
Crate & Barrel bed for years before Isadora gave
it new life by re-covering the headboard’s fabric

room’s soothing gray walls (Cement Gray by
Benjamin Moore). The complementary comforter
and drapes are from Target, and the linen throw
pillows are from Lacefield Designs. Popping
inexpensive pencil drawings from an estate
sale into identical wood frames makes them
look fancy. Isadora scored the Moroccan brass
pendant for free from a salvage company, where
she had a credit for pieces she gave them.

Bright colors, bold patterns, quirky accessories: A fun-loving

DINING ROOM
Throughout the house, the couple blended traditional with
modern touches. Here, Bernhardt dining chairs with velvet
seats got a clever update: chalkboard paint on the backs.
“You can use them instead of place cards if you’re having a
fancy dinner, and we have fun with them on holidays,” Liz
says. “For Halloween I like to write spooky things like, ‘Look
behind you!’” The chairs surround a slatted pedestal-base
table by Brownstone. The Sputnik glass-bubbles chandelier
is by Solária Lighting, and that vibrant wall paint is Atlantis
Blue by Benjamin Moore.

LIVING ROOM
Since it’s the couple’s prime hanging-out
spot, making this room equal parts fresh
and comfy was key. “We’re pretty casual
people, and we like to watch TV and eat
dinner here if it’s just the two of us,” says
Liz. In came a cozy sofa by Hickory Chair,
upholstered in gray velvet and deep
enough for 6-foot-8-inch-tall Austin. The
onyx-veneer coffee table, by Century, can
accommodate a couple of dinner plates.
An arched metal lamp and white tufted
chaise, both by Nuevo, and a velvet swivel
chair by Four Hands deliver the mod.

iz and Austin Kent are

always up for adventure. Back in
2010, when they lived in NYC and
worked in film production and
photography, they decided to move
to the Big Easy after Austin got a job
offer—not even visiting until they
had to find an apartment. A couple
of years later, they opened a pizza
franchise…because they thought
NOLA needed one. So when they
bought their first home—a renovated
1914 Craftsman that had 3,000
square feet of pristine white-on-
white everything and no spunk—the
couple were eager to take on the
challenge. “Houses in New Orleans
tend to feel very traditional, which
is nice, but not ‘us,’” says Liz. She
enlisted Penny Francis of local design
store Eclectic Home to help create
a fun, comfy, and offbeat space. The
couple got the distinct look they were
going for with a mix of sleek pieces,
cool hand-me-downs, and whimsical
accents. “This was the first time we’d
been able to install light fixtures and
paint walls, so I went a little crazy!”
says Liz. “Our friends love it. They
say it’s like stepping into my head.”
HGTV Magazine 87
FIREPLACE
Across from the sofa in the living room sits a marble
fireplace. On its own, it was way too formal for Liz.
She added a contemporary Philippe Bertho print of
a couple doing the tango, a slew of kitschy pieces
on the mantel, and a pair of Greek-key upholstered
ottomans from a New Orleans boutique. Flanking
the fireplace are two vintage-inspired crystal
sconces that Liz scored from the sale of a TV show
set that a friend worked on.

KITCHEN
The Kents lucked out with a redone kitchen—they
just had to rev up the style. So they painted the
white cabinets black (Universal Black by Benjamin
Moore). “The more my decor looks like a Tim Burton
film, the better,” says Liz (with a guest appearance
by King Kong, in a giant poster from the French
Quarter). A chandelier made with inverted wine
bottles by Present Time fits the hosts, known for
their Halloween and New Year’s Eve blowouts. The
molded plastic and metal stools are by Euro Style. HGTV Magazine 89

BAR AREA
The eclectic look of this drink
station, set in a corner of the
living room, is part purposeful,
part windfall: Once the couple
got their house, hand-me-
downs from family poured
in. The wood bar cabinet
originally belonged to Austin’s
grandfather, the Lucite chair
was his grandmother’s, and the
Art Deco–style print once hung
in Liz’s grandparents’ house.
For even more flair, Liz dropped
in a glass floor lamp by Nuevo.

90 HGTV Magazine
SITTING ROOM
The name may sound stuffy, but visitors are dazzled by
the first room they see when they walk into the house. Liz
wanted something dramatic that still felt fun, so she painted
wide black and white stripes on the walls (Decorator’s
White and Black Knight, both by Benjamin Moore). “This is
an old house, so nothing’s perfectly level—getting the lines
straight took blood, sweat, and tears!” Liz says. The black
velvet settee is a family heirloom, reupholstered for a fresh
look; the black cotton–covered egg chair is a vintage find
from designer Penny’s shop, Eclectic Home. The modern
Lucite table is by Interlude Home, and the flashy wood
lamps are from an art fair in Missouri.
OFFICE
Painted one of Liz’s favorite colors, pink (Luscious by
Benjamin Moore), the office is another lively matchup
of old and new. The oil-rubbed bronze and teal glass
chandelier is original to the home, and that’s Austin’s
grandmother looking out from the oil painting in a gilded
frame. They contrast (in a good way!) with the sleek
white-and-gold desk by Worlds Away, studded chair from
Aidan Gray, and hip black shag rug by Surya.

Take a fantasy tour of the HGTV Dream
Home 2018 in Gig Harbor, WA.

D esigning an HGTV Dream Home is a tall order. “It has

to be a house that HGTV fans will love—coastal, casual,
comfortable, colorful, and high-energy. No pressure!”
says designer Brian Patrick Flynn. The 1970s Gig Harbor,
WA, home HGTV found had tons of renovation potential and
breathtaking views overlooking Puget Sound. But Brian had a bit
of a nightmare on his hands: It had dark green siding; wall-to-wall
carpet (“even in the master bathroom!”); closed-off, bland outdoor
spaces; and basically no Pacific Northwest vibe whatsoever.
After painting the exterior a modern black (Tricorn Black by
HGTV HOME by Sherwin-Williams), he created a haven inside by
opening the kitchen to the living room for one beautiful, airy space;
installing whitewashed hardwood floors throughout the home;
adding more, more, more windows; and infusing the house with
nautical touches and pastel shades—the color of summer sunsets
in the area. Says Brian, “Now it’s serene, light, and happy.”
living room
It’s hard to believe this was once “a
complete mess,” as Brian describes it,
with a yellow pine ceiling and no practical
place to put furniture. “People dream of a
house that’s clean and perfect, and bright
white paint gives that look,” he says. The
shade: Olympus White by HGTV HOME
by Sherwin-Williams. For style that won’t
compete with the view beyond it, Brian
removed the old fireplace that was on the
right side of the room (too distracting)
and installed a sleek gas one in the
center, surrounding it with white-and-
gray marble tile. The white linen sofas
and the 40-inch-wide iron chandelier are
from Wayfair.

Before the reno, the kitchen was a cross
between 1970s country and a Tuscan

the Pacific Northwest!” Now it’s easy-

other than around the fridge, to keep
the look open,” he says. The Shaker-
style island (from Cabinets to Go)
has a custom oil-rubbed black walnut

barstools by Soho Concept. Instead
of a tile backsplash, Brian went with
engineered stone that resembles Carrara

KITCHEN
A pinch of cement tile, a dash of wood

“I wanted a Southwest-inspired
backsplash, like the motifs you see
Christen and Billy in
on blankets, but with no cheesy

colors,” says Christen. Tiles from
Cement Tile Shop, each in a blown-

up 8-inch-by-8-inch size, add kick
to the once-backsplash-less walls.

t he kitchen in the 1927 Los Angeles

bungalow that Christen and Billy
DeLaney bought five years ago wasn’t
dreadful. It was just really, really
dull. “We didn’t have a problem
with the layout, or even the finishes,” says
Christen, “but it had no flair. Not even bad
flair!” Previous owners had outfitted the
200-square-foot cook space with maple-

they could work with what was there. The
recipe: Pepper the kitchen with unique
details and textures that would bring it to
life—think graphic cement tiles, a cushy
wool rug, and sleek little concrete pendants.
“It has so much personality!” says Christen.
“Blending all the materials together makes it
feel different from any other kitchen.”

concrete

The old kitchen had
small, clear glass
pendant lights, “like
what you’d see in
a model home,”
Christen says. She

with industrial-chic
concrete fixtures from
HD Buttercup—a lot
bamboo shades more flavorful.

highlights was generously sized

custom bamboo shades to keep
the focus on the backsplash
and let the Cali sunshine peek in.

wood stools

the warm tone of this trio, from
Jayson Home, fits right in with the
wood floor and cabinets without
seeming too matchy.

The designers wanted

it’s custom-made by
