Welcome dance lovers of all ages to Snow White,

You are probably familiar with the saying, “Mirror,

mirror on the wall, who’s the fairest of them all?” That
question was first coined in Walt Disney’s 1937 classic
film, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

In our version, you may see similarities to the Disney

classic, but our production is truly unique in so many
ways. Our version is based on the famous fairy tale by
the Brothers Grimm and features familiar elements
like the characters of the Evil Queen, seven characters
who live in the woods, and of course, the poisoned
apple. As for the magic mirror, the story wouldn’t be
complete without it.
Overall, Snow White offers a unique blend of beauty, charm, and humor, especially
thanks to the marvelous cast of Northern Plains Dance students. I would be remiss
not to mention four fabulous young women gracing the stage with their talents
for the last time this weekend before they graduate. Emma, Sophia, Ella and
Julia May – you are, each one, a remarkable person with boundless gifts. I am so
proud of everything you have brought to NPD’s programs over the years, and it
is a privilege to have been a part of your story up until now. I will miss you dearly.
Kari and Chris, Kari and Matt, Jenny and Damian, Rachelle and Richard, deepest
gratitude for all of the support you have given to your daughters, NPD and me in
our time together.

Snow White is a wonderful opportunity for you and your family to slow down for a
short while and experience theater, art, music, and togetherness, especially on this
Mother’s Day weekend.

Thank you for joining us. Into the woods we go!

synopsis
Prologue
Once upon a time and far away lived the most beautiful woman in the land,
Altea. Proud of her beauty, Altea stood in front of her enchanted mirror every day
and asked: “Mirror, mirror, on the wall, who is the fairest of all?” And the mirror
always replied: “You, my queen, are fairest of all.” And she knew that no one in
the world was more beautiful than she.

Act I
In the court of King Ferdinand a ball is being held, it has come time for the King
to choose his Queen. Though many are lovely, the King must choose between
Altea, whose beauty outshines all others, and Aurora, whose sweetness is
surpassed by none. The King chooses Aurora, leaving Altea enraged.

Queen Aurora sits with her handmaidens and Oriana, her lady-in-waiting. Altea
enters, begging for forgiveness for her behavior, but Aurora banishes her from
the kingdom. Aurora returns to her sewing, pricks her finger with the needle and
blood falls onto the embroidery. Feeling faint, she asks Oriana to watch over
Snow White for she has had a premonition; when her daughter grows older, she
will be the most beautiful woman in all the land with skin as white as snow, lips
as red as blood, and hair as black as ebony. Suddenly, Aurora falls to the floor,
leaving little Snow White motherless.

Snow White grows to be just as her mother foretold and is the apple of her
father’s eye. On Snow White’s 8th birthday, the King announces his decision to
remarry, this time to Altea whose beauty has captivated him. Altea hates Snow
White for she knows that soon Snow White’s beauty will be greater than her own.
Oriana is desperate to protect Snow White from Altea’s jealousy.

As Snow White grows older and more beautiful, Altea grows more jealous. On
Snow White’s 16th birthday, she is the center of attention and nothing Altea does
can make King Ferdinand pay attention to her.

Now, when the queen asks the enchanted mirror: “Mirror, mirror, on the wall, who
is the fairest of all?” The mirror answers: “You, my queen, are fair; it is true. But
Snow White is a thousand times fairer than you.” Green with envy, she orders the
royal huntress to follow Snow White out into the woods, and stab her. As proof
that she is dead, the huntress must bring her heart back to Altea.

Snow White and her friends are enjoying an afternoon in the forest where they
are joined by woodland creatures. During one of their games, Snow White
wanders away from the group and deeper into the woods.

The huntress finds Snow White and draws her knife, but cannot kill her, instead
telling her to escape into the woods and never return. The huntress runs after a
young deer to gather its heart as proof of Snow White’s death.
Act II
At sunset, Snow White comes upon a little house. She enters and finds
everything to be small and a bit messy. Thinking she has found an empty cottage,
she summons forest birds to help her straighten up. Soon, she grows weary and
lies down on the little bed. Seven Woodcutters arrive at their house after a day’s
work, surprised to find their home tidy and Snow White, fast asleep.

They wake her, and Snow White tells them of Altea and the huntress. The
Woodcutters pity her and allow her to stay if she keeps house for them. They
warn her to watch out for the evil Queen.

Back in her lair, Altea asks: “Mirror, mirror, on the wall, who is the fairest of all?”
The mirror answers: “You, my queen, are fair; it is true. But Snow White is a
thousand times fairer than you.” Hearing the name of her nemesis, Altea knows
the huntress has deceived her. She plots to kill Snow White by tempting her with
a poisoned comb.

Altea, disguised as a gypsy, travels to the Woodcutter’s house. Knocking on the

door she requests a place to rest her weary feet.

She compliments Snow White’s Beauty and offers her a jewled comb. Altea sticks
the comb into Snow White’s hair with a vicious twist, and the girl falls down dead.
Altea, thinking that her evil work is done, returns to her lair.

At nightfall, when the Woodcutters come home they find their dear Snow White
lying on the bed as if she were dead. They notice the comb in her hair and
remove it. Snow White instantly comes back to life, free from the spell of the
comb. In her lair, Altea asks the mirror: “Mirror, mirror, on the wall, who is the
fairest of all?” The mirror answers: “You, my queen, are fair; it is true. But Snow
White is a thousand times fairer than you.” Altea trembles with anger. This time
she will make a poisoned apple, so shiny and red that anyone who sees it will not
be able to resist it.

The Woodcutters trundle off to work, again warning Snow White not speak to
anyone until they return. Snow White passes the day with her woodland friends.
Suddenly the gypsy is standing before her with a shiny red apple. Snow White
is wary but tempted and she accepts it. Snow White bites into the apple and
falls dead. Altea returns to the palace once again, satisfied that she is surely
the fairest of them all. The Woodcutters find Snow White lying motionless
on the forest floor. Try as they might, they cannot bring her back to life. The
Woodcutters place her in a glass coffin so that she can be easily seen, looking
only as if she were asleep.

Sometime later, Prince Florian is hunting in the forest. The wind whispers in the
trees and mysterious noises can be heard all around. Frightened, Prince Florian
is driven deeper into the woods where he comes upon a glass coffin. Enchanted
by Snow White’s beauty, he lays a tender kiss upon her lips. The spell is lifted and
she awakens, calling out to him. They return to the palace to be married. Snow
White grows frightened when she sees Altea and tells Prince Florian and the King
about her trials. The King promptly banishes Altea from the kingdom and they
live happily ever after…

Sensory-Friendly Performances
With the generous support of
Red Door Pediatric Therapy,
Northern Plains Dance is very
proud to have offered a Sensory-
Friendly Performance of Snow
White. Crafted with care, sensory-
friendly performances offer
accommodations to make anyone
in the theater comfortably able
to experience the transformative
power of dance. This program
provides an opportunity for children and families to feel joy and enter a safe,
judgment-free zone where all are welcome. These performances support
neurodiverse individuals, their families, and their caregivers by providing
emotional wellness, recreation, community-building, critical thinking through a
creative outlet, and most importantly community awareness.

Northern Plains Dance is committed to creating an atmosphere where all

audience members, regardless of ability, can receive the benefits of the
performing arts.
