1. INTRODUCTION

1.1 Introduction
Road safety awareness is crucial because it helps reduce the number of injuries and deaths on our
Roads. Road safety awareness , kids will learn about the critical road safety rules and the
Importance of following them. To stay safe, one must know the proper way to drive a car and
not rely on in car technology like a navigation system. It can be challenging to know how much
space one needs when driving a large vehicle like an SUV or a bus, so Keep in mind that one should
leave enough room for emergency vehicles if there is one nearby. Proper Knowledge and education
on road safety rules are required while driving or walking across the streets. Ensure to engage your
little ones in an interesting activity of writing on road safety awareness by referring road safety
awareness.

1.2 Road safety description

Road traffic safety refers to methods and measure for reducing of a person using the road network
For being killed or seriously injured. The users of a road include pedestrians, cyclists, motorists,
Passengers, and passengers of on road public transport, mainly buses and trams. Best practice road

Fallibility[1] safe road design is now about providing a road environment which ensures vehicle
Speeds will be within the human tolerances for serious injury and death wherever conflict points
exist. Road traffic safety refers to methods and measures for reducing the risk of a person using
the road network for being killed or seriously injured. The users of a road include pedestrians,
cyclists, motorists, their passengers, and passengers of on road public transport, mainly buses and
trams. Road safety pertains to the measures taken to reduce the risk of road traffic injuries and
death. Through intersectoral cooperation and collaboration, countries in the Region of the Americas
can work improve their road safety legislation and to create a safer, more accessible, and sustainable
environment for transport systems as well as for all road users. Excessive speed contributes to about
a third of all deaths caused by traffic in high income countries and half of them in low and middle
income countries. The rise in global road traffic deaths has been largely driven by the escalation of
death toll on roads in low and middle income countries, the risk of suffering road traffic injuries
depends on various social determinants, such as the use of alcohol while driving, excess speed,
traffic flow, and urban and infrastructural developments. Even though the region’s countries have
been incorporating and implementing various interventions to reduce road traffic injuries, the pace
of change has been slow.

2 . BACKGROUND STUDY

2.1 History
The history of the Road Safety Week in India dates back to 1989 when Morth observed a surge
in the number of vehicles, the growing congestion on roads and the subsequent rise in road
accidents.
Ministry of Road Transport and Highway annually undertakes this campaign to drive awareness
For road safety. This year marked the 35th Road safety week. Year after year, this week long
traffic safety campaign aims to diminish road accidents by educating riders and driver about
accident prevention measures, being responsible on the road, and encouraging them to adopt safe
driving practices.
2.2 Literature Survey
Road Accidents: (NCRB - 2015) Traffic Accidents‟ were reported during the year 2015 was
4,64,674 throughout India. Maximum number of traffic accidents occurred in the month of May
(45,215) and as per time wise analysis, maximum number of traffic accidents (80,113) were
reported during 1500 hrs. to 1800 hrs.(day) of day. 29.3% victims of road accidents were riders of
„Two Wheelers‟. „Trucks/Lorries‟, „Cars‟ and „Buses‟ have accounted for 19.4%, 12.4% and
8.3% of road accidental deaths respectively. Most of road accidents were due to over speeding
accounting for 43.7% of total accidents which caused 60,969 deaths and 2,12,815 persons injured.
abad Traffic Police (2017) Data from the official website about Nehru Outer Ring Road reveals
some guidelines like, the maximum speed on Lane 1 and Lane 2 of the ORR will be 120 KM per
hour and minimum speed will be 80 KM per hour. (Lane1 is the one closest to the central median)
The maximum speed on Lane 3 and Lane 4 of the ORR will be 80 KM per hour and minimum
speed will be 40 KM per hour. The minimum speed on ORR will be 40 KM per hour. No vehicle is
permitted to travel on ORR below this speed. Faster moving vehicles should move in Right Lanes
(Lane 1 and 2) and slow-moving vehicles should move in Left lanes (Lane 3 and 4) within the
above speed ranges. Heavy vehicles should move in Lane 3 or Lane 4 only. All vehicles which
change their speed shall have to go to the lane having the concerned speed range and No Zig – Zag
movement between the lanes is permitted. All vehicles wanting to change lanes as per the above
speeds should do so only after using indicator lights and all precautions shall be taken while .

3. DESIGN

3.1 Technologies Used

Radar guns, breath alyzers, and law enforcement interactions with the public are all examples of current
road safety measures. Speed limit signs indicate safe bounds for drivers to stay within while driving.
Other road signs and flashing lights indicate when extraordinary caution is needed on the road.
Still, every day there are crashes and fatalities related to unsafe driving. The fatality rates from traffic
incidents in the United States are declining, and this can be accounted for by the application of new
technologies like 5G-enabled road safety. The dual purpose of new technologies in the road safety field
is to identify and prevent issues leading to crashes.

Emerging Technologies with Potential to Contribute to Road Safety

One newer technology used to reduce the dangers of distracted driving is cell phone blocking
technology. Most often this is a smartphone app. The simplest of these technologies prohibit calls and
texts while a vehicle is in motion. More advanced apps track driving speed and other factors.
Another upcoming technology for road safety is satellite technology. These satellites will be positioned
high in the sky, though not as high as mapping satellites. They will use accurate pictures of incidents on
the road to provide valuable information in areas without static cameras.
We need to combine these improvements in visual technologies with vehicle
connectivity advancements, like artificial intelligence (AI) and IoT. By doing so, the technological
innovations of today can help reduce the risks involved with driving.

Problems in Road Safety Today

Some problems we see today in road safety are created by technology. For example, distracted driving
due to cell phone use behind the wheel leads to a significant number of preventable collisions.
According to the US Department of Transportation, distracted driving caused 3,142 deaths on US
roadways in 2019.
Other road safety problems have older roots. Every vehicle has a blind spot, as most drivers learn before
getting behind the wheel. Traffic congestion plays a large role in potential collisions. Over time, some
sections of roadway prove more dangerous during certain times of day or are prone to traffic accidents
because of the shape of the road.
Road safety is a global problem. According to World Health Organization data, road traffic injuries are
estimated to be the eighth leading cause of death across all age groups globally. Many places around the
world lack the proper technology to make roadways safer. Low- and middle-income countries have
higher road traffic fatality rates. Providing access to the advances in road safety technology is necessary
in making roads safe for all.

9
3.2System Design
A substantial reduction in road deaths will only be feasible if concerted efforts are made, following the
“Safe System” approach involving all elements of road safety, management, and delivery. This includes
all pillars of the Safe System—starting from road safety management, safe roads and roadsides, safe
speed, safe vehicles, safe road users, and post-crash care. This guide focuses on elements of safe road
and roadside designs for road networks that can provide safe mobility to all road users, as well as
complementary changes to improve speeds, vehicle safety, road user behaviors, and post-crash care. A
balanced road design must take into account these complementary system elements to maximize safety
benefits. The energy carried by a moving object is proportional to the square of its speed. A well-
designed “forgiving roadside” ensures that this energy is dispersed in a crash, and as a result, less energy
is transferred to the occupants.

Road infrastructure design plays a vital role in road safety outcomes. Safe infrastructure supports other
road safety pillars by encouraging appropriate road user behavior (such as appropriate speed and
correct lane position) and by providing a forgiving road environment if things go wrong. Poorly
designed road infrastructure can give rise to dangerous road user behavior.

Road Safety Tips

Road safety concerns us all, whether walking, biking, or driving. Accidents cause severe harm,
emphasising the need for safety compliance. Here are vital road safety tips:

1. Follow Traffic Laws: Adherence to speed limits, stopping at red lights, yielding right of
way, and obeying signs and signals is fundamental.
2. Wear Seatbelts: Whether driving or as a passenger, seatbelts markedly reduce injury
risk in collisions.
3. Child Safety: Ensure young children are correctly secured in age-appropriate car seats.
4. Avoid Impaired Driving: Never drive under alcohol or drug influence, a major
accident and fatality cause.
5. Prevent Distractions: Stay focused, refrain from phone use, texting, or any
distractions during driving.
6. Pedestrian Safety: Crossroads in designated crosswalks, look both ways, even if you
have the right of way, and enhance visibility, particularly in dim lighting.
7. Cyclist Safety: Always wear helmets, signal correctly, respect traffic laws, and utilise
bike lanes where possible.
8. Vehicle Maintenance: Regular checks on brakes, tires, lights, and signals can
avert accidents from mechanical failures.
