A manufacturer makes a slipper to sell internationally. The manufac-
turer is contracted to make slippers for Thailand and Spain.

The box plots show the sizes of slippers in Thailand and Spain. The
distributions shown in the box plots are based on the medians and
quartiles of the slipper sizes sold.

(a) Compare the sizes of slippers sold in two countries. [C2]

Page 2
The manufacturer makes slippers in two factories, one in Thailand and
one in Spain. The factory in Thailand makes 45% of the slippers and
5% are defective. The factory in Spain makes the rest of the slippers
and 8% are defective.
(b) Find the probability that a slipper, chosen at random from ei-
ther of the factories is not defective. [A2, C1]
(c) Given that a slipper is not defective, find the probability that it
was made in Spain. [A2, C1]

Ray is planning to construct a swimming pool in his backyard. He made
the following diagram for the dimension of the pool.

(a) Find a function P(x) for the perimeter of the pool in terms of x.
[A2]
(b) Ray’s backyard has dimensions 12 by 12 meters. Determine
the domain and range of P, taking into consideration the di-
mensions of his backyard. [A2]
(c) Find an equation for the inverse function P–1 (x). Express your
answer in the form P–1 (x) = mx + c [A1, C1]

Here is the information on the Leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy.

(a) The round tower is modelled as a large cylinder and a small
cylinder.Find the total volume of the round tower. Express your
answer as an exact value. [A4, C2]

A ball is kicked from (0,0) towards the posts and describes the path of
the parabola as shown in the figure:
The height in meters(m) of the ball above the ground is given by the
function

x(a – x)
f(x) = .
100

Page 6
A ball is kicked at the posts shown, the ball describes the path of a
parabola.
(a) Show that a=50. [A1]
(b) Find the maximum height achieved by the ball. [A2]

To score points the ball is kicked from the point (0,0) and must go over
a bar on the posts that is 3m above the ground and 40m away from the
point the ball was kicked. This is illustrated in the figure above.
(c) Remember the function for the height of the ball is f(x) = x(a–x)
100
.
Did the team score points? Show your work and reasoning. [A2, C2]
(d) Find the total horizontal distance for which the ball is above
4m. [A3]

Music is a widely accepted form of artistic expression and creativity. In
this question, you will be presented with the instrument design of an
acoustic guitar.
Humans can only hear between 20 and 20000 Hertz.

Here is a table with some information on the string number and fre-
quencies of the guitar on different strings and different frets.

String Number(n) 2(A) 3(B) 4(G) 5(D) 6(E)

Fret Number 1 8 15 22 29
Notes A0 A0 A0 A0 A0
Frequency (F) Hertz (Hz) 110 220 440 ? ?

The frequencies increase by a geometric progression and The fret num-

ber increase by an arithmetic progression.
(a) Write down the missing frequencies F as the string number
increases in the table. [D1]
(b) Deduce that all the notes on the acoustic guitar are within hu-
man hearing. [C2]
(c) Find a formula for F in terms of n. [D2]

Page 8
(d) Hence, rearrange your formula for part (c) to give n in terms
of F. [D3]
(e) A note has a frequency of 14080 Hz. Can it be a note on the
acoustic guitar? Justify your answer. [D1, C1]
(f) Average fret board length: 440mm.
The average number of frets on an acoustic guitar: 22.
A new design for an acoustic guitar will contain all of the above notes
and also the notes within human hearing.
Use the information provided above to discuss the practicality of the
new design for the acoustic guitar. In your discussion you should:
• dentify the relevant information for the new design.
• Calculate relevant measurements for the new design.
• Justify the degree of accuracy.
• Justify the practicality of the new design. [D8, C2]

In northern Cambodia, Koh Ker is a secluded temple site and his-
toric capital of the Khmer kingdom. The Prang, a seven-tiered, 36-metre
(118-foot) high pyramid that most likely served as a state temple during
the era of Jayaraman IV, who ruled from 928 to 941 CE, is the most
notable monument.
Originally, a massive lingam, maybe more than 4 m (13 ft) tall and
weighing many tonnes, stood on the top platform. It was said to be the
tallest and most magnificent Shiva-ling-am, according to inscriptions.
All lengths provided are given to the nearest centimetre (cm) and an-
gles are to the nearest whole degree.
You are planning to construct a scale model of the Koh Ker and will use
1:100 as a scale of your model. In this question, you will work out the
values of lengths. The validity of your model will be required in part (e).
(a) Find the sloping length s to the nearest cm. [D2]

Page 10
(b) Using the diagram above, find the height h of each platform in
your model. [D2]

Page 11
(c) Find the width W2 for the second platform in your model. Model
width W2 = cm. [D2]
(d) Find the width W6 for the second platform in your model. Model
width W6 = cm. [D2]
(e) Discuss the validity of your model for Koh Ker.In your discus-
sion, you should: [D2, C4]
• Identify relevant information required to discuss the valid-
ity.
• Consider the implications of your chosen degree of accu-
racy.
• Comment on the validity of the model of Koh Ker. design.

scribed inside a square and the square itself is inscribed inside a circle.
The pattern continues in the same way.
Consider Stage: 1

(a) Determine the area and perimeter of the circle and the square
at stage 1. [B2]
(b) The pattern at stage 2 is described as shown in the image
below. As the value of stage number changes, the respective

area and perimeter value changes. Complete the table for the
missing values. [B4]
(c) Predict the value of perimeter of square and circle at stage
= 7. [B1]
(d) Write down a general rule for Di and Pi in terms of i. [B2]
