People: Emma Lazarus

Emma Lazarus was an American Jew, she was born in New York City, 1849, and died in 1887 at the
age of 38 years old. She had a privileged education and wrote a volume of poetry. In this volume
there is a poem entitled “The New Colossus”, it contains the well-known words “Give me your tired,
your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free”. This phrase was attached on a tablet on
the pedestal of the statue of liberty 20 years after it was written. Emma chose this name, because it
reminded her of the Colossus of Rhodes, one of the wonders of the ancient world, so she decided to
call it “The New Colossus”.

Music: Daisy Bell / A bicycle built for two

Daisy Bell / A bicycle built for two is a popular song written in 1892 by Harry Dacre. This song was
inspired by Daisy Greville, Countess of Warwick, a mistress of King Edward VII. I chose this song
because, it reminds me of the cartoon and Disney Pictures I watched on TV when I was a child.

Images: V & C Ward & self in bathing suits

This picture was taken on July 11, 1890. We can see Alice, in the middle, and her friends, the sisters
Caroline and Violet Ward, posing for the camera before going to Clear Comfort to swim. Her friends
were wearing cotton or linen bathing costumes, which were uncomfortable in the water, while Alice
was wearing a short-sleeved outfit, which is more comfortable for swimming.
