Assignment 6 -MSO 203 M

November 9, 2023

Problem 1: (Neuman Boundary conditions on rectangles) Solve the fol-

lowing problem:

△u = 0 in (0, a) × (0, b),
(1)
ux (a, y) = f (y), ux (0, y) = 0, uy (x, 0) = 0 = uy (x, b).

Problem 2: Consider the following problem:

 ut − uxx = 0 in (0, π) × (0, T ),
u(0, t) = 0, u(ℓ, t) = 0, 0 < t < T, (2)
u(x, 0) = sin2 x, x ∈ (0, π).

Using maximum principal show that u(x, t) ≤ e−t sin x on (0, π) × (0, T ).

Problem 3: Prove that Laplace equation is rotational invariant; that is,

if A is an orthogonal matrix and we define the change of variable by Y =
AX, V (y) = u(x), then show that △V = 0.

Problem 4: Using the method of separation of variables solve the following

heat equations

 ut − 9uxx = 0 in (0, ℓ) × (0, ∞),
u(0, t) = 10, u(ℓ, t) = 100, t > 0, (3)
u(x, 0) = sin( πx ), x ∈ (0, ℓ).

Problem 5: Consider a function with the property v(r), v ′ (r) tends to 0

as r → ∞. Considering a function

u(x, t) = t−1/2 v(x/ t)

as the solution of the heat equation ut = uxx . Find v.

Problem 6: Find a particular solution of the problem

ut − uxx = sin(t) + x2 .

Problem 7: Let Ω ⊂ R2 be an open bounded set and u be a harmonic
function on Ω, with the property that

max u = 100.
Ω̄

Let
x0 ∈ A := {x ∈ Ω | u(x) = 100}
and r0 > 0 be such that B(x0 , r0 ) ⊂ Ω Then prove that

B(x0 , r0 ) ⊂ A.
