and Function

The Carendo parts are made of polypropylene,

some of the parts are reinforced with a steel
frame, for example the chassis. The Care
Raiser part is also reinforced with fibre-glass.
The battery cover is made of ABS-plastic and
ultra sonic welded together.

Lifting Function
The chair can in the sitting position be adjusted
vertical. The lifting/down movement is
performed by the linear actuator driven by an
electric motor.
There is a soft start for both up and down, but
no soft stop because this can give the feeling
that the chair moves after the button is released.
There is a time limit of up (max. 25 sec.) and
down (max. 20 sec.), then the actuator will stop
even if the button is pressed. The button has to
be released and pressed again to continue.

Reclined Function
From a sitting position a reclined position can
be achieved by means of the worm gear units
which make the back rest move downwards
and the leg support upwards.
There is a time out limit of the reclining
function (max. 30 sec.) The button has to be
released and pressed again to continue.

Reclining Direction
There is a soft start when moving towards
reclined position, but no soft stop (see Lifting
Function). The back rest will stop when one of
the micro switches in the worm gear unit
indicates reclined position.

Sitting Direction
There is a soft start when moving towards
sitting direction, but no soft stop (see Lifting
Function).

1. Both micro switches are activated in the
worm gear units indicating that the sitting
position is reached.
2. The motors will operate further for approx.
one second to make sure that the upright
position is reached.
3. The motors will reverse for a fraction of a
second to prevent tension in the gear wheels
in the worm gear units.
4. The locking device will be activated for 0.8
sec (pulling in the pins) if the care raiser
function has been used.

Care Raiser
A function which from a sitting position
reclines the back and raises the posterior parts
of the patient. The synchronised movement of
the back rest and the care raiser is possible when
they are connected with the pins of the locking
devices.
Upward Direction
There is a soft start when moving upwards, but
not soft stop (see Lifting Function).
If the back rest is in sitting position when
pressing the Care raiser button, the locking
device will be activated for 0.8 seconds to push
out the pins, then the care raiser will raise.
The care raiser will stop when one of the micro
switches in the worm gear units indicates top
position.
If the back rest is in the upright position and the
locking device has been activated the micro
switches in the worm gear units must release
within 6 seconds (including the soft start and
activating time for the locking device)
otherwise the motion towards sitting position
will be stopped.
If the two locking devices are not in the same
position it is not possible to move the back rest
towards sitting position.
Sitting Direction
There is a soft start when moving towards
sitting position, but not soft stop (see Lifting
Function).

Handset Check occasionally

for new editions.
The handset has six buttons for the following
functions:
1. Care raiser
2. Sitting position
3. Reclining position
4. Sitting position
5. Up
6. Down
Button 1 and 3 respectively button 2 and 4 are
connected in parallel. This means that if the
back rest is reclined buttons 1 and 3 work the
same way (reclining) just like buttons 2 and 4
work the same way (raising).
The green LED (A) is flashing (after pushing a
button) when following conditions are fulfilled:
A
• The back rest is in upright position
• Both locking pins are in the same position 1 2
• The emergency down is not activated
3 4
• The battery voltage is OK
5
The PCB is not damaged if several buttons are 6
pushed at the same time. All functions will then
be inhibited, except the locking device function
which always is allowed to finish its movement.

The handset buttons are membrane domes. The

current through these when operating is 10 mA
+/- 5mA.
The handset is protected in class IP X7.
NOTE! When unplugging the handset from the
back rest carefully lift the catches in order not to
damage the connector.

Emergency Down Check occasionally

for new editions.
The green button for the emergency down
allows Carendo to be lowered if:
• the handset is defective
• a fuse or the PCB is defective
The emergency down is protected by fuse F3.

Emergency Stop
In any case of emergency pushing the red
button stops all functions including the
emergency down.

Dead Weight Breakers

When lowering the chair, with the handset or
with the emergency button, it will
automatically stop if the seat part is pressed
against an object. The function is activated by
two separate microswitches on the actuator
(one for lowering: down, one for emergency
lowering: emergency down).
The purpose is to prevent injury and to prevent
Carendo from turning over.

Actuator

The actuator, located in the chassis, raises and

lowers the chair.
The cable from the PCB goes behind the right
turning gear and behind the frame cover via a
socket, into the frame and down to the actuator.
There are two versions for the connection
between bellows and lifting yoke:
Version 1
Includes one bracket (A) and one seal (B).
Version 2
Includes one bracket (A), two seals (B) and one
washer (C).
Motor with gearbox B
The motor 24V DC has a fixed gearbox. There
is a current limit on the PCB protecting motor A
and components. The current limit is also used Version 1
when the actuator reaches its upper end stop.
The actuator is short-circuited by a relay on the
PCB when not in use, this together with the
mechanical block prevents self-lowering.
Bearing housing B
The axial ball bearing works when the actuator C
is raising. There is a spring working as a B
reverse catch to prevent the actuator from A
moving too fast downwards with load. The
spring locks two rings, in that way the axial ball Version 2
bearing is by-passed, instead a thrust washer
with higher friction takes the load.
Rack nut
The rack nut is pressed together with a
coupling, connected to the outgoing shaft of the
gearbox. There is a cup spring on the upper end
position of the rack working as a damper for the
nut.

Pipe Check occasionally
for new editions.
The rack nut is located in the pipe. There are
two microswitches on the pipe, one for lift
down, one for emergency down. The racknut
has a extent motion of about 3mm (0.12")
against the pipe.
If the chair get stucked in position down or on
its way down and the pipe has reached the end
position on the rack, the rack nut will carry on
for 1-2 mm (0.04-0.08") and then the
microswitch will cut off the current.

Locking Device Check occasionally

for new editions.
The locking pins runs through the turning gear
(slide bearing) and into the Care Raiser to lock
the back rest and the Care Raiser together.

Locking device

Locking pins

The locking device for the Care Raiser function

is activated from the handset. It is only possible
to activate the locking device when the back
rest is in upright position and the green LED on
the handset is flashing. The LED flashes when
the microswitches of both worm gear units are Locking pin position when
closed in sitting position. the Care Raiser is activated

The locking device is attached to a

plate in the back rest behind the
service cover. Two 12V DC motors
with gearbox are activating a locking
pin each via a link system, pivoted in
the plate. Each locking device is
equipped with a microswitch
checking position locked/unlocked.
The locking pins locks the Care
Raiser to the worm gear units making
the Care Raiser follow the movement
of the back rest.

Worm Gear Unit Check occasionally

for new editions.
The worm gear units are located on each side of
the back rest of the chair. They recline and raise
the back rest with the seat/care raiser attached. Motor Hole for locking
pin - Care raiser
The 12 V DC motor has a fixed gearbox. The Axle worm gear
worm gear housing with worm gear is pivoted
in the housing and attached to the seat, the other Microswitch
fixed part of the housing is attached to the back sitting position
rest. The cover of the fixed housing includes Stop pins
two microswitches and a bearing race.
The microswitches are used to stop the worm
gear in the end positions. The microswitches for
reclined back rest are connected in series. This
means that the power is cut to both worm gears
when one of the microswitches is activated.
Microswitch lying
The micro switches for sitting position are also position
connected in series but closing which means Gear wheel
that both micro switches must be activated in
order to give a signal to the PCB. If there is a
signal to the PCB the motors will run slower for
a pre-set time to ensure that the back rest
actually will come in the right position for the
locking pins to be able to connect to the Care
Raiser. The green LED on the handset flashes
when both microswitches are activated.
There is also a current limit for the PCB as an
extra electronic protection of the worm gear
units.
