Tire Wear

Case Study 5

The case to be studied this week brings the case of Goodman Tire & Rubber Co. (GTRC), a

company in the tire industry. And we will analyze the quality and sampling ratios collected and the

respective data collected and previously informed.

Randomly, the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) tests over 2,400

types of tires annually. In 2015, NHTSA issued over 900 recalls, affecting 51 million vehicles nationwide.

And obviously, tire failure is the leading cause of accidents, injury, and death. And the cost of poor

quality can be in the hundreds of millions of dollars to the tire manufacturer due to lawsuits, liability

claims, and the cost of recalls fixing the problem and avoid greater damage.

Due to the seriousness of the matter, every week, the quality control of GTRC randomly remover

three radial tires from its production line and submits them to a standard test that simulates various

road conditions. Tread depth is measured before and after the test. We got the data for tread ear,

expressed in millimeters over the past 25 weeks.

In this paper, the quality control test results of tread wear of tires Goodman Tire & Rubber Co.'s

produces will be discussed using a histogram, x-bar chart, and R chart.

Reading figure 1 above, we have the histogram from the workbook. A histogram is a graphical

representation of data divided into classes, meeting the established requirements and what variation

they suffer. Usually used in quality control analyzes. In this case, it is evident that the treadwear in most

tires tested, 22 out of 75, was in the range between 26 mm and 30 mm. Other 22 samples were in the

range of 31 mm to 45 mm, and 25 samples were in the range of 16 mm to 25 mm.

Looking to figure 2 above, we can notice that the process that GTRC uses to produce radial tires

is in control. It is evident when we see no points in the X-bar chart beyond the upper control limit (UCL)

and the lower control limit (LCL). Most of the data points are close to the centerline (CL). Thus, we can

conclude that there is no special cause present in the GTRC quality control process. For this reason, there

is no need for the company to adopt significant changes in the process of producing radial tires.

And now, from figure 3 shown below, just like the X-bar chart, the R Chart also shows us the

same conclusion. All tire results don't cross over the UCL and LCL, and most of the range values are close

to the centerline.

Concluding, both the X-bar chart and R Chart showed us that the process that GTRC uses to

make its radial tires is in statistical control. And analyzing the histogram, we noticed 6 samples out of 75

that the result was the worst among tests collected. We don't know which metrics NHTSA uses to

distinguish whether such a result would be considered disapproved or still within acceptable limits.

However, quality has not been discussed for a long time, it must be, and that's it. Even more so with a

product like a tire whose tolerance for quality issues should be zero. So, GTRC should inspect the quality

of all processes and supplies to ensure the company will supply a quality assured product.
