Basic Stoichiometry PhET Lab
Let's make some sandwiches!
Introduction:
When we bake/cook something, we use a specific amount of each ingredient. Imagine if you made a batch of
cookies and used way too many eggs, or not enough sugar. YUCK! In chemistry, reactions proceed with
very specific recipes. The study of these recipes is stoichiometry. When the reactants are present in the
correct amounts, the reaction will produce products. What happens if there are more or less of some of the
reactants present?

Vocabulary: Before you begin, please match the following vocabulary words which will be used in the simulation. You may have
to look online or use your notes:

A. Stoichiometry C. Excess Reactant E. Combustion Reaction

B. Mole ratio D. Limiting Reactant F. Synthesis Reaction

D
______1. The reagent (reactant) in a chemical reaction that will be completely used up in a reaction.
A
______2. The mathematical relationships between the reactants and/or products in chemical reactions.

E A reaction in which oxygen in a reactant and water and carbon dioxide are typically products.
______3.

B
______4. The relationship between the coefficients in a chemical reaction (such as 2:1 or 1:3)

É
______5. The reagent (reactant) that will be left over at the end of a chemical reaction.
______6. A reaction in which 2 or more elements/compounds are combined into a single product.

Procedure: Go to this site: https://phet.colorado.edu/en/simulation/reactants-products-and-leftovers

OR Search: PhET Simulations  Play with the Sims  Chemistry  Reactants, Products, and Leftovers

Part 1: Making Sandviches:

1. The is a simulation of a two-reactant synthesis reaction. In this case, one reactant will
be limiting, while the other will be in excess.
2. Set the reaction to a simple mole ratio of 2:1:1
a. How many sandwiches does it make? _____________
r
b. Are there any leftovers? _____________
o
3. Complete the table below while making tasty cheese sandwiches: (for some of these you will have to figure out how
much of each reactant you need to get the products listed!!!)
Bread Used Cheese Used Sandwiches Made Excess Bread Excess Cheese
5 slices 5 slices
2 y 3
4 slices 3 slices
2 O V
5 2 sandwiches 1 slice 0 slices

Part 2: Real Chemical Reactions: At the bottom of your screen choose MOLECULES.
First we will be making WATER.

4. What is the mole ratio for the reaction of hydrogen and oxygen to produce water?
___H2 + ___O2  ___H2O
2 I 2
Name:____________________________
5. Complete the table below while making water H2O from hydrogen H2 and oxygen O2:

6. Notice that the labels changed from molecules to moles. This does not change the mole ratio, as a mole is simply a
large number of molecules. How many molecules is a mole? r _________________

7. Now try producing ammonia, (top right choose “Make ammonia”)
8. What is the mole ratio for the production of ammonia? ____N2 + ____H2  ____NH3

Now let’s try “Combust Methane.” This one has 2 products but will work the same way.

I

10. What is the mole ratio for the combustion of methane? ____CH4 + ____O 2O
