Impeller Selection

ƒ Because particle trajectories differ depending on it’s Froude (Fr)

number. it is desirable to have different impeller designs.
ƒ Fine particles are entrained by any turbulence in flow.
ƒ For fine particles reduce turbulence using HE impeller and operate
near BEP.
ƒ Coarse particles have more inertia and do not necessarily follow
the fluid.
ƒ For course particles use heavy duty impeller designed for particle
trajectories (not fluid).

Impeller Selection
Coarse Particles d85 > 300 micron

Heavy duty impellers

can perform up to
100% QBEP flow and
beyond but best wear
selection is in 60 -
80% QBEP flow
range.

Throat Bush Wear

ƒ FOR COARSE SLURRIES

ƒ Use a Heavy Duty impeller to minimise wear
ƒ Impellers without expelling vanes focus wear at the throat bush
eye
ƒ FOR FINE SLURRIES
ƒ Use a High Efficiency Impeller to minimise wear
ƒ No turbulence from smooth shrouds gives low wear
