The history of North and South Korea is filled with irony.

But the biggest irony came after the

deadliest conflict to date in the history of man which is World War 2.

Right after the defeat and subsequent ouster of the occupying Japanese, the allied powers
occupied two parts of Korea. Up North was the Soviet Union with its communist ideology. The South
was occupied by the United States. Korea was supposed to be a free country, but it ended being divided
by their very liberators.

This division eventually ended in conflict. The North, with hopes of reuniting the country under
one communist flag, suddenly invaded the south on June 25, 1950 thus starting the Korean war. This act
of aggression was widely viewed as an act of treachery by democratic nations particularly the United
States and its allies. Of course, North Korea did not act on its own as it was supported by China and the
Soviet Union. Because of its scope, the invasion is widely considered as the first military action of the
cold war.

Fast forward to the present. The cold war has ended but the Korean Conflict still remains
unresolved. There are no armed clashes, but Korea is still a divided country. South Korea has opened
itself to other nations, while North Korea has built its foreign policy around independence, peace and
friendship towards other friendly countries. However, it is still viewed as a hermit kingdom, walling itself
from the world.
