INTRODUCTION
• Building construction projects are getting bigger and bigger each day, and
the waste coming from the construction site is always unprepared, can cause
pollution to the environment.
• Construction and demolition waste produce over 10 billion tons each year,
with China accounting for over 2 billion tons, Europe contributing 858 million
tons, and the United States contributing 534 million tons (Povetkin & Isaac,
2020).
• The problem of waste management at construction sites, always cause this
pollution.
• However, the construction workers on sites are not aware of the waste
management solution due to the high cost for removing waste from the
construction site.
PROBLEM STATEMENT
• Waste materials processed by the construction industry get higher every year
due to a lack of ability to do waste management.
• In the construction industry, the quantity of material proposed is more than the
amount needed to run some projects to ensure there is no shortage at the end
of the construction.
• The material order will cause waste materials from that construction
development.
• As a result, the construction industry tends to be well-known among the worst
types of environmental polluters.
• Proper method of construction will help minimize waste in the construction
industry by implementing it at the design stage.
• Therefore, the construction method of using BIM and IBS is one of the new
technologies introduced in the construction industry.
PROBLEM STATEMENT
• This BIM-IBS is supposed to help the project progress faster and assist
construction site management with waste management.
• However, in most construction sites, a lot of waste is generated due to many
factors, such as the wrong size produced by the fabricated company.
• This situation tends to be one of the factors for the waste material increase
eventhough the BIM-IBS have been implemented (Begum et al., 2010).
• Therefore, this study is very important to assess the relationship between
construction waste causes and BIM-IBS practices and how these two are
connected to reduce waste material in the design stage.
RESEARCH QUESTIONS
This question was developed after identification to focus on the
objective of the research. The question are:
• Why there is less implementation of this BIM-IBS technique in the
construction industries?
• What is the cause of the construction waste increase?
• How can construction waste be reduced at the design stage?
• What is the relationship between waste causes and the BIM-IBS
practices in reducing construction waste through the design stage?
OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY
Therefore the objectives of the study are to:
1. To identify the relationship between waste sources and BIM-IBS
practices in reducing construction waste through the design stage.
2. To determine the effectiveness of BIM-IBS practices in reducing
waste in construction projects.
METHODOLOGY
Respondents: contractor, consultant and authority
Sample Size:
Questionnaire: Online (Google Form)
• Section A : identified the background of the respondent
• Section B : identified the waste cause in the construction industry
• Section C identified BIM-IBS implementation practices in Malaysia
• Section D identified the efficiency of BIM-IBS implementation and
the reduction of waste cause.

• The causes of the construction waste increase because of some issue arise
during the design stage such as
 last minute changes, design mistakes,
 lack of information on drawing and
 design and detailing error.
• According to the results of the survey obtained. Construction waste can be

reduced by implementing construction methods using BIM-IBS. Most of the

respondent agreed about the positive effect towards BIM in IBS construction.
• The implementation of BIM-IBS can reduce waste stage by resolve the issue
arise at design stage.
• The causes of construction waste during the design stage may be reduced if
the government gives many initiatives to industry players and emphasizes the
use of BIM-IBS in the construction industry.
• Construction industry players need to increase their knowledge of these
technologies to ensure the construction industry can deliver project quality and
also help the environment by reducing construction waste. The implementation
of BIM-IBS is a best practice for the construction industry.
