Mod #3 Post-Lab Questions

CHM 2046L, Section 009, Lauren Disney

1. Beer’s Law
𝐴 = ε𝑐𝑙
𝐴 means Absorbance
−1 −1
ε means Molar absorption coefficient (𝑀 𝑐𝑚 )
𝑐 means Molar concentration (𝑀)
𝑙 means optical path length (𝑐𝑚)

Beer's law explains how light absorption (A) is directly proportional to path length and the
concentration of the solution. So, when relating this to my linear equation: 𝑦 = 86. 5𝑥 + 0. 0409
where y represents absorption and x represents concentration we can determine either variable
from the other.

2. UV-vis spectroscopy
The purpose of UV-vis spectroscopy in this lab was to understand the absorbances of the
Fe(SCN)^2+. In order to collect the absorbance values we must take the peak of the max of the
collected wavelength data produced by the machine of which we examine. The Highest
absorbance values correspond to the maximum wavelength values. So, the maximum
wavelength was 455nm.

4. Limiting Reagent

SCN- in this case is the limiting reactant of the two and in identifying this we can
understand and compare the Fe3+ excess values to understand how much SCN- we
have because since there is too much in the reactants side through chatelier’s principle
we can understand the equilibrium will shift over toward the product’s side. We can then
find the concentration of the product from the concentrations that we have deduced
from the
