PRACTICE SET 3 (PROJECTILE) (PKS)

1. A student and his friend while experimenting for projectile motion with a stop-watch, taken some approximate

30 to the horizontal and after 1.0 s, it is travelling horizontally. Determine the magnitude and the direction of
initial velocity of the stone.
Ans - u = 20 3 m s,  = 60

2. A cannon fires successively two shells with velocity 250 m/s. The first at an angle 60° and the second at the
angle 45° to the horizontal, the azimuth being the same. Find the time interval between their firing so that the
two shells collide in air. Assume no air friction.
Ans.- t = 11sec

3. A stone is thrown up from the top of a tower 20 m with a velocity of 24 m/s at an elevation of 30° above the

ground. Take g = 10 m / s 2
Ans.- 67.75 m
4. Two bodies were thrown simultaneously from the same point one, straight up, and the other, at angle  = 60
to the horizontal. The initial velocity of each body is equal to v0 = 25 m / s. Neglecting the air drag, find the
distance between the bodies t = 1.70 s later. Take g = 10 m / s 2 .
Ans.- 22 m
5. A particle is thrown in horizontal direction with speed u from a point P ,
the top of a tower shown in figure at a vertical height h above the
inclined plane of inclination  . Find the speed with which the particle is
thrown so that it strikes the plane normally. Also find the distance from
the foot of the tower where the particle will strike

6. A ball is dropped from height h above a point on an inclined plane, with angle of inclination  . The ball
makes an elastic collision with the surface and rebounds off the plane. Determine the distance from the point of
first impact to the point where ball hit the plane second time.
Ans.- 8h sin 
7. A horizontal electric wire is stretched at a height h = 10m
above the ground. A boy standing on the ground can
throw a stone at a speed u = 20 ms −1 . Find the maximum
horizontal distance x at which a bird sitting on the wire
can be hit by the stone.
Ans.- 20 2

8. Ab is a pipe fixed to the ground at an inclination of

37°. A ball is projected from point O at a speed of
u = 20 m / s at an angle of 53° to the horizontal and it
smoothly enters into the pipe with its velocity parallel
to the axis of the pipe. [Take g = 10 ms −2 ]
(a) Find the length L of the pipe
(B) Find the distance of end B of the pipe from point
