What do

you have to
say about
this picture?
In real life we meet many imbalances ,can we identify some you may
know?
How do we call such imbalances in math ? Or Which name do we give to
such imbalances ?

Give some Imbalances in math?

Learning Objectives

By the end of this lesson , you should be able

to
• Identify and use inequality symbols
• Illustrate inequalities on the number lines
• Solve linear inqualities in one unknown

Introduction
We live in an unbalanced world. Some people are richer than others,
some are more educated than others ;and some have access to better
health care than others and many other imbalances . These
imbalances are known as INEQUALITIES.
For each of the two symbols, the small end always points to the smaller
number asshown

Use any of the inequality symbols of less than< or greater than > to
compare these
1 90 − 91
2 123 − 456
3 909 − 457
4 3.5 − 3.8
5 (− 1000) − (− 234)
6 − 80 − 0

Write a mathematical for each of the statements below;
1 Two is less than nine

2 Fifteen is greater than eight

3 100 is more than 88

4 5 litres is little compared to 8 litres.

Representing inequalities on a number line

• To represent an inequality on a number

line, use an open circle for <
or > symbol and in case of ≤ or ≥, use a
closed circle.
Representing inequalities on a number line

Represent each of the following inequalities on a number line:

1 x >−4

2 x ≥ −4

3 x <2

4 x ≤ 2

5 −4<x <2

6 −4<x ≤ 2

7 −4≤ x <2

8 −4 ≤ x ≤ 2
