Tutorial 8 - Design of WDS, Reservoirs and Spillways

NOTE: Make necessary assumptions and state them. The articles/clauses used from
codes/manuals should be appropriately referred.

1. Analyze the pipe network shown in the figure below using Newton-Raphson method. The
network inflow-rate is 0.5 m3 /s and the hydraulic head at the inlet is 10 m. The Hazen-
Williams roughness coefficient for all pipes may be assumed to be 100 and the minor losses in
the network can be ignored. All the junctions are at the same elevation. Estimate the hydraulic
head at each junction, and flow rate and velocity in each pipe.

Q = 0.5 m3/s
H = 10 m

2. Repeat the above analysis by using EPANET software and compare the results.

3. A reservoir has an average area and depth of 400 km2 and 25 m, respectively. The average flow
rate of the river in 3500 m3 /swith a sediment concentration of 150 mg /L. Assuming that the
accumulated sediment has a bulk density of 1600 kg/m3 , estimate -

a. the rate of sediment accumulation in the reservoir

b. the rate at which the depth of the reservoir is decreasing due to sediment accumulation
c. the average suspended sediment concentration in the water released from the reservoir.

4. A reservoir has a capacity of 130 MCM at FRL. The average water and sediment inflow into the
reservoir are estimated as 200 × 106 m3 /year and 2000 × 106 kg/year respectively. The sediment
inflow was found to have a composition of 30% sand, 30% silt and 40% clay. Estimate the time
in years required for the capacity of the reservoir to be reduced to 50% of its initial capacity.
Assume the sediment is always submerged.
5. Estimate the live storage of a reservoir having the following monthly inflows (MCM)

6. Design an Ogee spillway with an effective crest length of 100 m and design discharge of 2000
m3 /s. The maximum allowable water elevation in reservoir is 500 m and the bottom elevation
behind the spillway is 300 m. The upstream face of the spillway is vertical and downstream
face merges with a straight channel of slope 1:1.5 [H:V].

7. The design discharge of a 20 m wide spillway is 400 m3 /s. The water surface elevation in the
reservoir is 100 m and water surface elevation on the tail-water is 50 m. Design the stilling
basin assuming that the length of the spillway channel is 150 m .
