IGOROT RITUALS AND DANCES

Despite the fact that each Igorot tribe has its own distinct
movement patterns, the Igorots share common religious beliefs
and use their dances to praise anitos or household gods. The
tribesmen usually dance in vacant areas of the village in a way
that is meaningful to the specific purpose of the dance, such as
war, for example. Dancing is still an expression of community life
among these people, animating the various rituals and
ceremonies. The Igorots dance to heal, worship ancestors and
gods, and ensure positive outcomes during wars, harvests, and
weather, as do many non-literate societies. They dance to ward
off bad luck, to congregate and socialize, to commemorate life
events, and to express suppressed emotions.
