PARTIAL DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS

SEATWORK:

A laterally insulated silver bar, 10𝑐𝑚 long, has a thermal conductivity (𝑘) =
1.04 𝑐𝑎𝑙 / 𝑐𝑚 − 𝑠𝑒𝑐 − ℃ , density ( 𝜌) = 10.6 𝑔 / 𝑐𝑚3 , and specific heat
0.056 𝑐𝑎𝑙/𝑔℃ . After an initial condition of 𝑓 (𝑥 ) = 𝑥, the bar is insulated at both
ends.

a) Write the IBVP Summary with the given data

b) Calculate 𝑢(𝑥, 𝑡) and
c) Draw the graph of 𝑡 = 10 𝑠𝑒𝑐 on the 𝑢(𝑥, 𝑡) vs 𝑥-plane.
d) What is the temperature of the bar at 𝑥 = 5 𝑐𝑚 after 10 seconds from
𝑡 = 0?
e) Will any part of the bar attain 120℃? If so, what point (𝑥 value) along the
length of the bar. If not, state your reason.
