COMBINED

GAS LAW
GROUP: 5
COMBINED GAS LAW
The combined gas law combines the three gas laws:
Boyle's Law, Charles' Law, and Gay-Lussac's Law. It
states that the ratio of the product of pressure and
volume and the absolute temperature of a gas is
equal to a constant. It is simply a combination of the
other gas laws that works when everything except
temperature, pressure, and volume are held
constant.
The combined gas law is one of the ideal gas laws.
It gets its name because it combines Boyle's law,
Charles' law, and Gay-Lussac's law.
When using this law, only pressure, volume, and
temperature can change. The amount or number of
moles of gas is held constant.
Essentially, the law states that the ratio between
pressure, volume, and absolute temperature of a gas
equals some constant. So, if you change one of these
variables, you can predict how the other factors are
affected.
PV/T = K: WHERE P =
PRESSURE, V = VOLUME, T =
ABSOLUTE TEMPERATURE
(KELVIN), AND K = CONSTANT.

THE CONSTANT K IS A TRUE

CONSTANT IF THE NUMBER OF
MOLES OF THE GAS DOESN'T
CHANGE. OTHERWISE, IT
VARIES.

ANOTHER COMMON FORMULA

FOR THE COMBINED GAS LAW
RELATES "BEFORE AND AFTER"
CONDITIONS OF A GAS:

P1V1 / T1 = P2V2 / T2
EXAMPLE:

A GAS HAS A VOLUME OF 3 L WITH A PRESSURE OF 2 ATM AT 300

K. WHAT WILL BE THE NEW PRESSURE OF THE GAS WHEN
VOLUME IS REDUCED TO 1 L AT 250 K?
GIVEN:
V1 = 3 L V2 = 1 L
P1 = 2 ATM P2 = ? UNKNOWN
T1 = 300 K T2 = 250 K
SOLUTION:
THE FORMULA FOR COMBINED GAS LAW IS P1V1/T1 = P2V2/T2
TO SOLVE FOR P2 WE CAN USE THE FORMULA P2 = P1V1T2 / T1V2
P2 = P1V1T2 / T1V2
= 2 ATM × 3 L × 250 K / 300 K × 1 L
= 1500 ATM / 300
= 5 ATM
ANSWER:
THE PRESSURE IS 5 ATM
THE COMBINED GAS LAW HAS PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS
WHEN DEALING WITH GASES AT ORDINARY
TEMPERATURES AND PRESSURES. LIKE OTHER GAS LAWS
BASED ON IDEAL BEHAVIOR, IT BECOMES LESS
ACCURATE AT HIGH TEMPERATURES AND PRESSURES.
THE LAW IS USED IN THERMODYNAMICS AND FLUID
MECHANICS. FOR EXAMPLE, IT CAN BE USED TO
CALCULATE PRESSURE, VOLUME, OR TEMPERATURE FOR
THE GAS IN CLOUDS TO FORECAST WEATHER.
