PROJECTDETAILS
Version : 1.0
Revision : 0.0
Revision Remark : NA
2. Applicable Standard:-
IRC:67-2012
3. Definitions:-
Coefficient of retro-reflection R’:- It can be obtained from the luminous intensity (I) of
theretro-reflective area in the direction of observation and illumination (E┴) on the retroreflective
plane at right angles to the direction of the incident light and the illuminated plane sample surface
area(A),
R' =I/E┴* A
The unit of coefficient of retro-reflection R' is candle per square meter per lux(cd.m-2.lx-1).
Retro-reflection means is the reflection of light which is returned indirections close to the
direction from which it came, and this property being maintained even over wide variations of the
direction of the incident radiation.
Observation angle (α):-Observation angle is the angle between the illumination axis and the
observation axis as shown in below figure and denoted by α.
Entrance angle (β):-Entrance angle is the angle from the illumination axis to the reference
axis. The reference axis is an axis perpendicular to the retro reflective surface as shown in below
figure and denoted byβ.
4. About Traffic signs board:-
Purpose:-The purpose of road signs is to promote road safety and efficiency by providing for the
orderly movement of all road users on all roads in both urban and non-urban areas. Road signs
notify road users of regulations and provide warning and guidance needed for safe, uniform and
efficient operation. The road signs are the means of communication to the road users, especially
drivers.
Therefore, the signs shall be so placed that the drivers can recognize them easily and in time
.Normally the signs shall be placed on the left hand side of the road.
Substrate:-
The substrate in a Traffic Sign board typically consists of either Aluminium sheeting or
Aluminium Composite Material (ACM)
The retro reflective sheeting used on the signs shall consist of white or coloured sheeting having a
smooth outer surface which has the property of retro reflection over its entire surface. It should be
weather resistant and exhibit colour fastness.
a.) CLASS A SHEETING: Engineering and Super Engineering Grade Sheeting as per
ASTM.D4956-09 Type I and II.
b.) CLASS B SHEETING: High Intensity and High Intensity Prismatic grade sheeting as per
ASTM D4956-09 Type III and IV.
c.) CLASS C SHEETING: All Micro Prismatic grade sheets as per ASTMD4956-09TypeVIII,
IX and XI.
General guideline for selection of sheeting considering the performance characteristics of each
type of sheeting for different category of roads and also on economic consideration and visibility
requirements in Indian context as given below table.

The colour chosen for informatory or guide signs shall be distinct for different categories
of roads. For various categories of road in India, following colour pattern shall be used for
direction information sign as given in Table .

The ZRS 6060 is an ergonomic retroreflecto meter for determination of night visibility
(coefficient of retroreflection RA and R’) of traffic signs, safety garments and other reflective
materials with measurement of three different observation angles at the same time.
The ZRS6060 retro reflecto meter used in the projects conforms to the following standards:
