MARINE

OFF-SHORE
M A R I N E

Introduction
There is often the need to transport raw materials and combustible solid material from one continent
to another by use of the sea. The ships that do this are becoming bigger, so the modern port has to
be equipped with all kinds of machines like shiploaders, shipunloaders, cranes, conveyors, etc. to be
able to complete the vessel’s loading/unloading process in the minimum time.

To guarantee efficiency in the ports it is necessary to:

 optimize the position and the volume of the material that is stored and in transit, waiting
to be shipped

 have adequate machinery to reduce the time of loading and unloading of the ships, and
the delivery of the raw material

 organize the layout of the terminal in the most functional way

 reduce the number of operators needed through automation of the process

 create eco-friendly terminals by using dedusting equipment

Thanks to its experience in and knowledge of bulk handling, Bedeschi is successful in all of the
previous points. Moreover drafts of ports are sometimes limited, therefore Bedeschi developed and
today is market leader in floating terminals solution to transship materials from barges to big vessel
in case of export operation or vice versa in case of import.

M A R I N E

The increasing ship sizes has influenced Bedeschi production in two different ways:

 In new ports that are designed to accommodate for larger ships, Bedeschi has created machines with
a higher loading capacity able to fulfill the new loading and unloading needs.

 In the existing ports, which are not able to accommodate for larger ships, the loading and unloading
process must be done outside of the port.

For this reason, Bedeschi created a new set

of transhippers as in the case of Vale, where
the largest and most powerful floating
terminal ever built is in operation. The
shuttle vessel carrying iron ore remains
anchored near the ship that has to be
loaded and the Bedeschi shiploader moves
and travels the length of the transhipper.
The 285,000 ton buffer storage transhipper
is equipped with a Bedeschi conveyor
system and traveling shiploader with a
design capacity of 5,000 tph which amounts
to a daily rate in excess of 100,000 tons.
M A R I N E

Or in the case of Princess Chloe, a floating transfer unit, in

operation in Indonesia since 2010. The cargo handling
system supplied by Bedeschi consists of two hoppers and an
array of conveyor systems leading to a telescopic/shuttle
shiploader. The hoppers are of 50 m3 volume with a top
opening sufficient to accommodate the footprint of the large
grabs in use. The shiploader is of shuttle/telescopic boom
type and has 19 m air draft which makes the Princess Chloe
capable of loading large vessels up to cap size. The cargo
transfer takes places when the floating terminal is safely
moored alongside the ocean going vessel with barges,
transporting the coal form the mine head, alongside. The
delivery shiploader to the ocean going vessel’s holds at an
average guaranteed daily rate of 40,000 tonnes.
M A R I N E

Conclusion

New port are difficult to be realized

both for the high costs and the long
time required for the civil works.
Instead, the transhipper solution is
able to offer in 5-8 months an
operative system for import/export
with a smaller investment.

NO PORT?...NO PROBLEM!
