The Contents pages: The first thing you will notice are the contents pages. The contents pages are there
for you to find the things you want to learn or look at again quickly and easily.
The Units: There are ten units in this book. Each unit has a topic page which gives an idea of what the
unit is about. On the unit page you will see The Big Picture" which tells you what grammar points or
language you will learn. You will also see a phrase that is related to the topic that you are going to learn.
The units start with a Global Knowledge page. This page is designed to help you associate new grammar
or vocabulary with your previous knowledge to use it with authority.
Tasks: At the end of each unit, you will come across a task to produce language in context either
individually or interactively. The tasks will help you integrate the skills, vocabulary and grammar that you
learnt throughout the unit. The tasks are intended to serve as a foundation for the meaningful language
production.
Vlogs: At the end of the units you will see a Vlog activity. The VLOGs are opportunities for you to make fun
interactive videos related to what you are learning. VLOCs are intended to build confidence for speaking
through recycling as the creation process could serve as a preparation to acquire and fine-tune the
speaking skill.
Vocabulary: You will also find special vocabulary pages at the end of each unit where you can see any new
words from the unit. You will also see a ‘Use it or Lose it’ language learning tip which will help you to learn
new vocabulary. Use these vocabulary learning techniques to build your language. Through this section
you will acquire crucial strategies to build up and link words, thus learn vocabulary easily.
Reflections: One of the most important things about learning is reflecting: looking back on what you have
learnt. On the reflections pages you will see a section called 'Can / do it?' where you can look at what you
have learnt and be sure you know it. If you are not sure, then you can go back and check the pages. You
will also see 'My Takeaway'- this is where you personalise your learning and write something that you learnt
from the unit or something you remember.
Recaps: After every two units you will see ‘Recaps'. There are mini tests which will help you assess your
learning and show you what you need to practice more or what you know very well.
Outside the Box: After unit ten you will find the extended learning section with special features:
MyWords: This is a personal place for you to write down new vocabulary for you.
Grammar Reference: The grammar reference is a place where you can help check the grammar that you
are learning and check what you understand.
Creative Tasks: These are creative tasks for you to help build your language skills in a fun way.
Listening Transcripts: All of the listening tracks that you will listen to in the book have transcripts at the
back of the book so you can check anything that you want to from the listenings.
MyPad: This is a personal space for your writing. You can use it as a place to write whatever you want to help
your learning. It could be notes or stories, anything, but the important thing is that it is your own learning
space.

In 1965, Eastman Kodak released the Super 8mm film format into the market. The Super 8 enjoyed most of its
financial success by allowing people to record their own home movies.
When Sony released Betamax to the Japanese market on May 10.1975, the world of home viewing entertainment
would begin its transformation. It only took a year for Victor Company of Japan (JVC), to produce their own
analog recording videotape cassette technology. JVC’s Video Home System product, better known as VHS,
would begin the Videotape Format War. Recording time was a big factor in VHS’s dominance over Betamax. It
would be the MCA DiscoVision that first put the LaserDisc on North American shelves. It was released in 1978
and although it was a success in Japan and some of the richer areas in Southeast Asia, LaserDisc was never able
to fully break into the American and European markets. LaserDisc’s technology would be the
foundation for CDs. DVDs and Blu-rays. The Digital Video Disc was invented
in 1995 by Philips. Sony, Toshiba and Panasonic. < -

not inspire consumer confidence. However, Sony was able to use their larger
presence in home entertainment to their advantage. They had their popular
