Q.

1)

a)Tucker company needs to produce 1100 tucker automobiles. The company

has four production plants. Due to differing work forces, technological
advances and so on, the plants differ in the cost of producing each car. They
also use a different amount of labor and raw material at each. This is
summarized in the following table:

Plant Cost(1000) Labor Material

1 16 3 2
2 11 4 3
3 10 5 5
4 8 7 6
The labor contract signed requires at least 300 cars to be produced at plant 2;
there are 3400 hours of labor and 380 units of material that can be allocated
to the four plants. The company wishes to maximize the profit it makes by
choosing how much of each production plant to produce.

b) Answer with true or false:

1) Change in the coefficients of the objective function will definitely result in

changing the optimal values of the variables.

2) In a simplex iteration, the pivot element can be zero or negative.

Q.2)

Use graphical method to solve the following LP problem:

Max Z=10X+12Y

Subject to:

5X+6Y ≤ 60 , 8X+4Y ≤ 72

3X+5Y ≤ 45 , Y ≤ 6 , X ,Y ≥ 0

Q.3)
Here there are five machines to be assigned to five jobs. The numbers in the
matrix indicate the cost of doing each job with each machine. Jobs with costs of
M are disallowed assignments. The problem is to find the minimum cost
matching of machines to jobs.

Job J1 J2 J3 J4 J5
Machine
M1 M 9 5 11 2
M2 13 12 6 M 8
M3 10 M 6 14 M
M4 11 12 M 16 15
M5 18 17 14 M 13

Q.4)

Use Vogel's approximation method and least cost method to find the initial
solution to minimize the cost of the following transportation problem.
Q.5) Use simplex method to solve the following LP problem:

Max Z=3X1+5X2

Subject to:

X1 ≤ 4

2X2 ≤ 12

3 X1+2X2 ≤ 18

X1 , X2 ≥ 0

Q.6) Use graphical method to solve the following LP problem:

Max Z=12X+14Y

Subject to:

5X+6Y ≤ 60 , 8X+4Y ≤ 72 , 3X+5Y ≤ 45 , X ,Y ≥ 0

Q.7) Power Company has 3 electric power plants that supply the needs of 4
cities. Each power plant can supply the following numbers of kilowatt-hours
(kwh) of electricity: plant 1 –40 million; plant 2 –55 million; plant 3 –45
million. The peak power demands in these cities, which occur at the same time
(2pm), are as follows (in kwh): city 1 –50 million; city 2 –20 million; city 3 –35
million; city 4 -35 million. The costs of sending 1 million kwh of electricity
from plant to city depend on the distance the electricity must travel. Use least
cost method and Vogelʼs approximation method to find the initial solution to
minimize the cost of meeting each city’s peak power demand .
