3 Definitions
3.1 Material Type. The various specific steel types covered in this specification are as follows:

3.1.1 Mild Steel. Mild steels are steels with high ductility and formability, with relatively low yield
strength. The different grades are generally a balance between the formability required and the
strength. Interstitial free (IF) grades are typically Silicon killed steels and non-IF grades are typically
aluminum killed steels. The higher formability grades are typically stabilized by Titanium, Niobium
and/or Boron in lieu of Carbon or Nitrogen.

3.1.2 High strength, low alloy (LA). Steels usually have higher strengths through the addition of
micro-alloying additions such as Vanadium, Niobium, Titanium, Molybdenum, etc. Also known as
HSLA.

3.1.3 Carbon Manganese (CMn). Carbon Manganese steels are an intermediate grade between
High Strength Low Alloy and Dual Phase, which exhibit more strain hardening behavior than Low
Alloy Steels.

3.1.4 Bake Hardening (BH). Bake hardening steels exhibit a marked increase in yield strength when
processed through the paint bake process (elevated temperature). The time temperature
dependence of the strengthening mechanism can limit storage and shipping.

3.1.5 Dual Phase (DP). Dual phase steels exhibit a microstructure consisting of martensitic regions
in a ferritic matrix. They tend to exhibit a strong work hardening tendency and are often suitable for
forming operations with significant stretching.

3.1.6 Transformation Induced Plasticity (TR). These steels have a typically ferritic / bainitic
microstructure plus some retained austenite. During processing the metastable retained austenite
transforms to martensite, leading to a significant work hardening. Also known as TRIP.

3.1.7 Complex Phase (CP). These steels consist of fine grained multiple phases microstructure,
typically a mixture of hard phases such as martensite or bainite in a ductile ferritic matrix. (These
steels tend to have a lower hardening coefficient than dual phase steels).

3.1.8 Martensitic (MS). The microstructure of Martensitic steels is predominately martensite giving
them a high strength and lower ductility than most other grades.

3.1.9 Ferritic Bainitic (FB) steels have a microstructure of bainite in a ferritic matrix. The ferritic matrix
is typically strengthened through precipitation, grain refinement and high dislocation density.

3.1.10 Future Grades. The following grades are not currently called out as part of this specification,
but are included for completeness as they may be required in future revisions and for reference
against similar industry specifications.

TM-2011 TESLA MOTORS STANDARD
Version 06 Material Specification: Steel, Rolled Product - Sheet and Strip

3.1.10.1 (High strength) Interstitial Free (IF) steels typically achieve their strengths through solid
solution strengthening with manganese, silicon and phosphorous. They typically exhibit a
pronounced yield point, high ductility and r-values, and storage times no not tend to affect their
high formability.

3.1.10.2 Small Grain Size Low-Alloy (MC) micro-alloyed steels achieve a fine grained
microstructure through thermo-mechanical processing using finely dispersed precipitates to
inhibit grain growth (typically carbides and nitrides).

3.1.10.3 Twinning Induced Plasticity (TWIP). These are austenitic steels with a high manganese
content. During deformation the austenite undergoes twinning which causes a high hardening
rate (n-value) as the microstructure becomes finer and finer. The resultant twin boundaries act
like grain boundaries and strengthen the steel. Also known as TWIP.

3.2 Coatings. The various coatings that can be used per this specification include:

3.2.1 Galvanized (GI). Hot dip zinc coating is applied to the steel through submersion in a molten
bath of greater than 99% zinc.

3.2.2 Electrogalvanized (EG). Electrogalvanizing coats the steel with a 99.9% zinc coating through
an electrolytic process.

3.2.3 Galvannealed (GA). After passing the steel through a zinc bath containing at least 99% zinc,
the subsequent annealing process diffuses iron into the zinc layer. The resultant coating has a dull
matte grey appearance and an iron content in the coating of 8 to 13%.

3.2.4 Aluminum Silicon (AS). The coating is applied to the steel through immersion in a bath
containing aluminum with a silicon content of between 8 and 11%.

3.2.5 Zinc Nickel (ZN). Electrogalvanizing of the steel to produce a zinc rich coating with 9 to 13%
Nickel.

3.2.6 Zinc Magnesium (ZM). Zinc Magnesium hot dip coating produced by immersion on a molten
zinc batch containing aluminum and magnesium composition totaling at between 1.5 and 8%.

3.2.7 Uncoated (UC). Uncoated steel.

3.3 Symbols. The symbols used for this specification are defined as:

4 Nomenclature
4.1 The following nomenclature shall be used to specify grade as defined by this standard:

[Rolling Type-(formability)]-[Min YS]-[Min UTS]-[Steel type]-S-[Coating type][Coating mass]-[Surface quality]

Where:

4.1.1 [Rolling Type] is typically either hot rolled (HR) or cold rolled (CR). Hot rolled steels are normally
in gauges above 2.5mm. For mild steels this is followed by a formability number from 1 to 5 where
the higher number represents better formability. The formability number code is not used for other
steels. Direct strip casting shall adhere to the CR requirements.

4.1.2 [Min YS] is the specified minimum specified yield stress of the grade.

4.1.3 [Min UTS] is the specified minimum specified ultimate tensile stress of the grade.

4.1.4 [Steel Type] is the chemistry / manufacturing technology used for the steel grade. Steel type
is omitted for mild steels.

4.1.5 [S] is used to indicate that the material is a sheet metal.

Example: CR1-140-270-S-EG60/60-U refers to a cold rolled mild steel of drawing quality

(formability), with a minimum Yield Strength of 140 MPa, a minimum UTS of 270MPa, with an
unexposed surface quality and an electro galvanized (EG) surface coating of at least 60g/m2 on both
sides.

4.2 Grades. A complete list of grades defined by this specification is given in Table 1, with the coating
and exposure codes have been omitted. Similar grades are for reference only. Some equivalent grades
have slightly different requirements than those defined by this specification. Equivalency to a validated
grade per this table does not constitute validation per this specification, nor does it constitute approval
by Tesla Materials Engineering

The amount of micro alloying elements (niobium, titanium, vanadium) together shall be ≤0.35%.

5.3 Microstructure. Cross-sectional micrographs in both longitudinal and transverse directions, etched
as necessary to show grain size and (where applicable) the morphology and volume fractions of various
phases, shall be provided at magnifications of 100X (total image area of approx. 10 mm 2) and 500X
(total image area of approx. 2 mm2). Images at other magnifications shall be provided in addition to
those prescribed above, if other magnifications are deemed necessary to meaningfully characterize the
microstructure.

5.3.1 Grain Size. Grain size shall be uniform throughout the material. Grain size measurements shall
be measured and reported in accordance with ASTM E112.

5.3.2 Phase Volume Fraction. For DP, TR, CP, FB, and TW grades, the percent volume fraction of
each phase shall be measured using optical or electron microscopy and a systematic point
count/automatic image analysis (e.g. ASTM E562, ASTM E1245) and/or x-ray diffraction (e.g. ASTM
E975 for retained austenite). For all other grades phase volume fraction reporting may be performed
without formal measurement as long as second phases constitute no more than 1% of the total
volume of the microstructure.

5.3.2 Cleanliness. Steel cleanliness analysis shall be performed using image analysis according to
ASTM E45-Method D, Plate I-r (Inclusion content shall not exceed a rating of 2.0) or automatic image
analysis (e.g. ASTM E1245). Steel shall be free of internal disontinuities detrimental to manufacturing,
part performance or function.

5.3.2.1 Sulphides. HSLA steels with sulphide control (LAS) shall have modified MnS content and
morphology (small and more rounded) for improved edge stretching.

5.4 Mechanical Properties. The mechanical properties are defined for all grades in Tables 5, 6 and 7.
The mechanical property requirements listed are defined as those prior to paint bake. Properties of bake

hardenable grades shall exhibit an increase in yield strength per the BH index listed in Tables 5 and 7
over the properties measured before paint bake.

5.4.1 Tensile Testing. Tensile testing shall be undertaken using 50mm initial gauge length specimens
per ISO 6892-1 Type 1 or ASTM E8M Specimen 1 prepared per IS0 377. Alternative test methods
may be allowed after approval from Tesla Materials Engineering. The ratio of guage length to the
square root of the cross sectional area (𝐿0 /√𝐴0 ) shall be reported.

5.4.1.1 Location of test samples. Production lot release test specimens shall be taken from the
longitudinal direction for all steels except mild steels unless the test method explicitly requires
testing in multiple orientations (such as rm). Mild steel specimens shall be taken from the
transverse direction. For qualification purposes specimens shall be taken from multiple directions
to characterize degree of anisotropy—see Table 15 for details.

5.4.1.2 Modulus of Elasticity. The measured elastic modulus used for calculation of mechanical
properties should be within 15% of the expected value. This criteria is to ensure the validity of
the test method and calculations used, not as a material requirement.

5.4.1.3 Yield Strength. For steels with a pronouced yield point the specified yield shall be the
lower yield point. For other grades the 0.2% offset method (using the measured modulus of the
sample) shall be used as the yield criterion.

5.4.1.4 Elongation at Break & Gage Length (AGL). Minimum elongation values specified refer to
the plastic elongation at fracture for a given Gage Length (GL). Elongation should be taken from
extensometer machine measurements, and should include both plastic and elastic strain.
Elongation at fracture is dependent on the gage length used, particularly when materials possess
a high degree of ductility and demonstrate a significant amount of necking prior to fracture.

5.4.1.4.1.1 Qualification. During qualification testing, two elongation at fracture values

are required, one at 4.5mm and another with either a standard 50mm (typical in North
America) or 80mm (typical in Europe) gage length. The 4.5mm gage length measurement
can be done with non-contact methods such as optical extensometers or Digital Image
Correlation (DIC). This value is used in design analysis. The 4.5mm gage length shall be
measured on a full size specimen and post processed to be centered over the fracture
location. If fracture occurs outside the desired gage length, the test is invalid. In the
event that optical extensometers are not available, Reduction in Area can be reported with
approval from Tesla Materials Engineering. The values obtained over the standard 50mm
or 80mm gage length, shall be used to establish acceptance criteria for production lot
release and quality control.

5.4.1.4.1.2 Production Lot Release. For the purposes of standard lot release and
quality control, elongation at fracture shall be reported using a 50mm or 80mm gage
length, which ever was used during qualification testing.

5.4.1.5 Uniform Elongation (Ag). The uniform elongation is defined as the the maximum uniform
strain prior to necking or fracture occurring, measured as the total strain (plastic plus elastic).
The uniform elongation shall be reported.

5.4.1.6 Plastic Strain Ratio (r). The plastic strain ratio shall be determined in the uniform
elongation region of the tensile test curve. It shall be calculated at 20% strain per ASTM E517 or
ISO 10113 (refer tables 4 and 6). If uniform elongation is less than 20% then it shall be calculated
at the point of maximum uniform elongation. The strain at which the measurement is taken shall
always be reported with the r value. Values for rm shall be the determined as the weighted average
of measurements of r0, r45, and r90 according to the procedure outlined in ASTM E517.

5.4.1.7 Strain Hardening Exponent (n). The n values shall be calculated per ASTM E517 or ISO
10275 in the uniform elongation region of the plastic tensile curve. The calculation shall be
performed between 10% and 20% elongation. If maximum uniform elongation is between 10%
and 20% then n and K values shall be calculated between 10% and the maximum uniform

elongation. For certain grades (particularly DP steels) with even lower elongations, n and K values
shall be calculated between 4% and 6% per Table 6.

5.4.1.8 Strain Rate Sensitivity (m). Strain rate sensitivy must be known in order to perform
adequate design and stamping simulations prior to production. Tensile tests shall be conducted
at multiple strain rates, from 0.008 to 1000 mm/mm/s, in order to determine m as a function of
strain rate and strain.

5.4.1.9 Stress Strain Curve. At least one full Engineering Stress-Strain cureve in the Longitudinal
directoin shall be provided in order for Tesla to create complete crash and stamping simulation
cards.

5.4.1.10 Bake Hardening Index. Bake hardenable grades exhibit an increase in strength when
processed throught the paint bake ovens. The increase in yield strength of 2% pre-strained
samples after exposure to 170°C for 20 min shall be at least the amount listed in Table 6 when
measured to EN 10325. Additionaly Tesla specific paint bake results will be required for initial
qualification using 2% pre-strained samples and exposure to 185 °C for 20 min (using 15 minute
linear ramp from 25°C to 185°C). When the requirement for bake hardening index is listed as
“Report”, no increase in yield strength after paint bake is required, but testing should still be
performed and results reported during qualification.

5.4.2 Hole Expansion Ratio. The hole expansion ratio shall be determined in accordance with ISO
16630.

5.4.3 Time Guarantee The properties shall be guaranteed for a period of six months from the agreed
availability date for all grades except CR1 (which will be guaranteed for 1 month). The agreed
availibility date for most instances will be the delivery date.

5.4.4 Blanking. Blanking operations can impart work hardening into the material, which can
adversally impact subsequent stamping operations. Durring blanking, work hardening must be
limited and result in no more than a 5MPa increase in Yield Strength of the material unless a written
exception is provided on a part-by-part basis from downstream part stamper for each balnk.

5.4.5 Additional Limits. may be determined by agreement between the supplier and Tesla Materials
Engineering, and will be defined in a supplier-specific addendum to this specification.

the steel. If not specified then unexposed (U) is the default. Any exceptions should be specified on
the part specific drawing.

5.7.1.1 Unexposed (U). Steel is not specifically for visible “class A” surfaces. Therefore minor
surface discontinuities which do not affect the formability, function, performance and coating
quality are permitted. Unless otherwise specified coated steel shall be delivered in the skin
passed condition with minimal spangle.

5.7.1.2 Exposed (E). Surface is an exposed panel where the surface quality shall be sufficient to
achieve a uniform “class A” finish, free from visible imperfections. The “back” surface shall at
least conform to the unexposed “U” condition. All products classified as exposed grades shall
also be free from stretcher strains for 6 months after delivery. Exposed grade steel shall be
supplied with no spangle in the skin passed condition.

5.7.2 Surface Finish. The surface roughness of skin passed products when measured per ASME
B46.1 or EN 10049 are defined in Table 19 Measurements should be made perpendicular to the
rolling direction.

5.11.2 Marking. All steel should be marked with sufficient information to track its complete
manufacturing details. Marking should always be on the unexposed side of any exposed (E) grade
steel. Labelling of all product must meet Tesla Labelling specifications. And should include Part
Name, Part Number, Size, Quantity, Weight, Specification, Making Date etc. Traceability of parts
per BMS-0000151 should be at least as stringent as Grade B.

6 Qualification
6.1 General Requirements. Material suppliers must submit a complete material qualification package
consisting of the data outlined in Table 13 for each unique material to be qualified, and approval of that
package by Tesla Materials Engineering is required for material qualification. Data shall be submitted
using a Tesla provided “Qualification Data Submission Tempalte.” Additionally, a complete PPAP
package (including Process Control Plan) must be submitted to Tesla Supplier Industrialization
Engineering in accordance with BMS-0000051. Reduction in these qualification requirements (e.g.
testing representative thicknesses rather than all thicknesses for a given grade) may be permissible, but
any reduction requires the approval of Tesla Materials Engineering and Tesla Supplier Industrialization
Engineering.

6.2 Unique Material. A unique material is defined for the purposes of qualification as a unique
combination of grade and thickness, produced on a single set of processing equipment, from a single
raw material source, in a single location. Distinct coil widths do not require independent qualification.

6.2.1 Qualification by Similarity. When approved by Tesla Materials Engineering, qualification of a

material by similarity, for example multiple gages of a given grade, may be approved via full
qualification testing of the unique material plus a limited number of qualification tests for those similar
materials. Typical supplementary qualification testing on similar gages may include, but not limited
to:

6.2.1.1 Surrogate Data: Surrogate data typically consists of historical lot release test results. 6
coils of surrogate data shall be provided to Tesla for analysis.

6.2.1.2 Reduced Testing: When surrogate data is unavilable, qualification by similarity can be
completed with a limited degree of testing. This testing will typically consist of, but is not stricly
limited to, mechanical properties, chemical composition and micorstructual analysis from 1 coil
at the head, tail, edge and center locations.

Acceptance of qualification by similarity will primarily be based on wheather the suplementary data
falls within the statistical distribution of the full qualification results.

6.3 Lot Requirements. A minimum of 3 coils are required the first phase of qualification. A minimum of
3 additional coils, distinct from those used in the first phase and from a different cast lot from those
used in Phase 1, are required for Phase 2 of qualification.

6.4 Material Shipment. Production Material Shipment. Material supplied to this specification shall be
qualified by Tesla Materials Engineering prior to shpping materials to Tesla or any of Tesla’s suppliers.
Approval to ship prior to full qualification requires the approval of Tesla Materials Engineering and Tesla
Supplier Industrialization Engineering with a Deviation.

6.4.1 Pre-Production Materials. Un-qualfied materials for pre-production vehicles can be shipped
without a deviation if Phase 1 qualification testing is complete. If Phase 1 is not compelte, materials
must be shipped on Devaiation. Additional testing per the discression of Tesla Materials Engineering
may also be required for review prior to approval to ship ahead of full qualification.
