Can you give me statements that convey

your opinion?

Yes, John?

What else?

Good job!

Remember, if a sentence does not simply

“claim” something without supporting
evidence and if it can be proven. It is a
FACT.

If a statement claims something based on

the narrator’s personal belief or
preference, it is an OPINION.

To determine whether a statement is a

fact or opinion, ask yourself "Can this
statement be proven?", "Does this
statement express someone's
thoughts/preference or feelings?"

For example: Your heart pumps blood

through your body.

Is it a fact or opinion?

Why do you say so? Can this statement

be proven?

Very good! The statement conveys fact.

Mango float is the best dessert you can

serve at the table for occasions. It is
sweet, creamy, and easy to prepare.
Mango float tastes like ice cream.

Is it a fact or opinion?

Why do you say so? Does it convey

someone’s feelings or preferences?

Excellent! The statement is an opinion.

Well done, class.

Now, let’s see if you will be able to apply
what you learned by looking at this text.

the text express someone’s thoughts or

claimed that her mother makes the most

is an opinion because the text expresses
someone’s feelings.
