Concepts:
 The volume of a prism is the amount of space inside the prism. Volume is measured in cubic units, which means
it tells you how many cubes of a given size it takes to fill the prism.
 Volume of Prisms is the product of the base area (B) and the height (H).

V=B•h Since B = l • w, then V = l • w • h

Example: Find the volume of the refrigerator at the right.

Solution:
The refrigerator at the right is a rectangular prism.

V=l•w•h

= (3 m) (2 m) (6 m)

= 36 m 3

 Volume of Pyramids is the amount of space inside the pyramid. Volume is measured in cubic units, which means
it tells us how many cubes of a given size it takes to fill the pyramid.

1 1
Formula: V= •b•h or V= (l • w • h)
3 3

Example: Find the volume of the pyramid at the night.

Solution:
1
V= (l • w • h)
3

1
= x 62 m x 40 m x 50 m
3

1
= x 124 000
3

= 41 333.33 m 3

 Volume of Cylinders is the product of the circular base area (B) and the height (h).
Formula: V = ℼ • r2 • h

Example: Find the volume of coffee in this mug at the right.

Solution:
V = ℼ • r2 • h 3 cm

= (3.14) (3 cm ¿ ¿2 (10 cm)

= (3.14) (9 cm2) (10 cm) 10 cm

= 282.6 cm3

1
 Volume of Cone the formula for the volume of cone is the base area (B) times the height (h).
3

1 1
Formula: V= •B•h or V= • ℼ r2 • h
3 3

Example: Find the volume of the cone at the right.

Solution:
1
V= •B•h
3
1
= • ℼ r2 • h
3
1
= (3.14) (2 cm ¿ ¿2 (5 cm)
3

1
= (3.14) (4 cm2) (5 cm)
3

1
= x 62.8 cm3
3

= 20.9333 cm3

4
 Volume of Sphere the volume of sphere with radius (r) is ℼ times the cube of the radius.
3

4
Formula: V= • ℼ r3
3

Example: Find the volume of the sphere at the right.

Solution:
4
V= • ℼ r3
3

4
= (3.14) (50 m¿3
3

4
= (3.14) (125 000 m 3)
3

= x 392 500 m 3
3

= 523 333.33 m 3

APPLICATION (Apply)
Activity 3
Solve the following problems. (No.1 is done for you)

1. A water tank is shaped like a cylinder. It is 20 meters tall and has a radius of 7 meters. How many
cubic meters of water can the tank hold? Round your answer to the nearest whole number.

1
Solution: V= • ℼ r2 • h
3

1
= (3.14) (7 m¿2 (20 m)
3

1
= (3.14) (49 m 2) (20 m)
3

1
= x 3,077.2 m 3
3

= 1,026 m 3
