Assignment 3

Two semicircular brass layers attached by brazing to a rectangular steel layer that make up a
150 mm metallic rod AB. Figure Q3 depicts the metallic rod's cross section area. A rigid cap
plate at B is attached to the rod AB and an axial tensile force of P = 40 kN is applied on it.
Given that the rod AB is fixed at point A on a platform and the elastic moduli of steel and brass
of rod AB are ESt = 200 GPa, EBr = 97 GPa, respectively.

Figure Q3

i. Draw free body diagram (FBD) for the rod AB.

(1 marks)
ii. Calculate the normal forces, N (kN) for both steel and brass layers of the rod AB.
(5 marks)
iii. Evaluate the deformation, 𝛿 (mm) for each materials in rod AB.
(1 marks)
iv. Determine the normal stresses, σ (MPa) for both steel and brass layers of the rod
AB. Please state whether the stresses are in compression or tension for both
materials.
