a. The writer’s main point in the extract is that although there is a shortfall in supply, no

definitive cause has been given for the price of oil which has remained stable and declined

in some territories.

The extract adapted from the Daily Express is based on the global issue relating to the price of oil.

The nationwide production of oil has been unsteady resulting in different territories being affected

in various ways. The writer’s purpose in the extract is to inform the reader that oil prices have

remained fairly stable and unexpectedly did not escalate following the decrease in manufacture

and supplies within the international region. The main components of the piece includes a myriad

of features such as comparison and contrast, statistical data and tone.

To start, the use of comparison and contrast is used to engage the reader. More specifically, it was

implicitly stated that oil prices from the past were compared to present times to show consistent

decline in cost. This is effective in displaying comparison in relation to prices causes the reader

to reflect on the past and contemplate possible reasons for this, although none were explicitly

stated. This encourages the reader to think about the future, the projected cost and possible

justifications that may arise.

Additionally, the use of statistical data is another feature utilized in the extract. The writer makes

use of figures pertaining to the cost of oil during different times of the year. These include line 5,

“oil prices past 100$ a barrel…”, line 20-21, sweet crude for December fell by $1.69 to $95.01 a

barrel …prices rose as high as $98.62. The use of such statistics help to support the writer’s

statements. They are factual and therefore verifiable, thus making the information more reliable.

In this way, the reader is more inclined to trust the information.

On that note, an informative tone is yet another aspect utilized by the writer. The writer’s tone can

be described as informative. This comes as a result of the plethora of facts and supporting details

that are used throughout the extract. The tone is suitable because it helps to make the reader more

knowledgeable concerning the topic. It builds confidence in the reader who now understands the

gravity of the issue given its far reaching impacts.

To summarise, the extract focuses on the topic of the global cost of oil which seems to be on a

decline. To achieve the writer’s purpose, a variety of features such as comparison and contrast,

statistical data and an informative tone were used.
