SHEET 8

1) Static Var Compensator (SVC) is connected at 230kv ac bus which

supplying three phase inductive load of (1500Mw+j750Mvar). The TCR can
draw maximum of 50 Myar per phase whereas the TSC consists of four
capacitor bank. Each with per phase rating of 25Mvar. Holding the ac bus
voltage to its nominal value for 20% increase of load reactive power.
a) Determine the number of capacitor banks should be switched on.
b) Compute the effective inductance of TCR.
c) Calculate the firing angle at which TCR operates and
d) Calculate the susceptance of SVC.

2) A hybrid arrangement of TCR and TSC is connected at 230 kv ac bus, the

TCR can draw maximum of 50 Mvar per phase whereas the TSC consists of
capacitor bank. Each with per phase rating of 50Mvar. Holding the ac voltage
to its nominal value for 10% increase of load reactive power Q the load
initially is (1500Mw+j750Mvar). Calculate
a) The number of capacitor banks should be switched on.
b) The firing angle at which TCR operates.
3) A single-phase load having ZL = (4.0 + j1.0) pu is fed from an AC supply
with an input AC voltage of 230 V at 50 Hz and a base impedance of 4.15 Ω.
It is to be realized as a unity power factor load on the AC supply system using
a shunt connected lossless passive element (L or C) as shown in Figure E1.
Calculate (a) the value of the compensator element (in farads or henries) and
(b)equivalent resistance (in ohms) of the compensated load.

4) A single-phase AC supply has rms voltage of 230 V at 50 Hz and a feeder

(source) impedance of 4.0 Ω inductive reactance after which a single-phase
load having ZL = (16 + j12) Ω is connected. If it is to be realized as a unity
power factor load on the AC supply system using a series compensator
consisting of lossless passive elements (L and/or C) as shown in Figure E3.3,
calculate:
a) the voltage drop across the source impedance and
b) the voltage across the load without and with a series compensator.
c) Moreover, calculate the values of compensator elements (in farads or
henries) and its kVA rating.
d) If this series compensator is used to raise the load voltage to the input
voltage (230 V).
e) calculate the values of compensator elements (in farads or henries)
and its kVA rating.
