Chapter 6 (Friction)
➢ Types of Friction:
1- Dry Friction (our scope)
2- Fluid Friction (between layers of fluids)
3- Internal Friction (elastic material when recover from deformation losses energy due to
friction)
➢ Tangential forces called friction forces can be generated between all real (rough)
surfaces.
• Note that 𝝁𝒌 is usually a bit smaller than 𝝁𝒔 , meaning that, once motion begins, less force P
is required to maintain the motion than was required to initiate the motion.
• The value of P which causes the maximum static friction force marks the onset of motion, a
condition called impending motion (𝑭 = 𝑭𝒎𝒂𝒙 = 𝝁𝒔 𝑵) and use equilibrium equations to
determine any unknown.

Homework
Solution
Ex:
A block with weight 𝟑𝟐𝟎 𝑵 has an applied force of
𝟏𝟐𝟎 𝑵 across an inclined plane, with an angle 𝜽 = 𝟐𝟓°.
Find the value of the friction force if the coefficient of static
and kinetic friction (𝝁𝒔 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝝁𝒌) are 𝟎. 𝟏𝟕 and 𝟎. 𝟑𝟔
respectively.
Solution
Ex:
Determine the force of friction for the block shown (𝒎 =
𝟐𝟎 𝒌𝒈) with applied forces of 𝟒𝟎𝟎𝑵 and 𝟐𝟓𝟎𝑵. The coefficient of
static friction is 𝟎. 𝟔 while the kinetic friction is 𝟎. 𝟑𝟒.
Solution
Ex:
In the figure shown below, a 𝟑𝟎 𝒌𝒈
block has a load 𝑷 = 𝟐𝟓𝟎𝑵 applied to it at
angle of 𝟏𝟎°, which is connected by a cable
to a 𝟏𝟎 𝒌𝒈 block on an inclined plane at
𝟑𝟎°. Determine the tension (T) caused by
the cable. Also, calculate the force of friction
for each block if it is assumed that the
system is in impending motion (𝝁𝒔 = 𝟎. 𝟕).
Solution
Ex:
A 100 kg block rests on an incline. Block B has a mass of
𝟕𝟎 𝒌𝒈. The coefficient of static friction between the block and
the ramp is 𝟎. 𝟐. The mass of the cable is negligible, and the
pulley at point C is frictionless. Will the 𝟏𝟎𝟎 𝒌𝒈 block move? In
what direction?
