Hailing from a middle-class background and bugged by the idea to earn my own pocket money right

after my higher secondary, left me try out a lot of things starting from short modelling stints to
volunteering for my college events for an extra pay of 100rs. A 20-yr something, highly enthusiastic of
life, I was always intrigued by the idea of earning early and paying for my own things without asking for
father’s help. However, none of these gave me the satisfaction I wanted. Sometimes either it was the
poor working conditions or low pay than expected. Sometimes my travelling costs would exceed the
amount I was earning from exploring these activities. Nevertheless trying out the flurry of activities gave
me a sense of the real world way before I had stepped my foot into the corporate world.

There came a point when shattered by the choices, I left trying out or looking for any new opportunities.
Also with my Btech curriculam, it became a bit tough to keep up with those activities. But as Rumi said in
one his quotes “What you seek is seeking you”. In one of my lazy mornings at home, I found the 10-year-
old kid of my house help, studying in grade 5 then, trying to learn the basics of Triangles and struggling to
get through it. I offered to extend my help for the time being and helped him understand the basics of it.
Although it wasn’t an easy task for me since coming from an English medium I myself struggled to
understand few jargons of the Bengali medium text, but surely it made me feel happy that I could share
my knowledge with the kid. As days passed by, I started helping him in an unofficial capacity on
weekends for 2hrs with the various subjects. Although there was no monetary return on this,
nevertheless I felt a lot of joy and satisfaction helping him out. As the word passed by, I got 3 more
students of similar age from my neighborhood who insisted I teach them in return of a basic monthly
salary. I was overjoyed since it not only helped me fulfil my long lost wish of earning my pocket money,
but I was also able to contribute to the society in a small way.

Making monthly exam question papers, correcting them, teaching subjects like Maths, Geography,
History, Social science, I realized teaching is a noble profession and entails a lot of patience. You have to
be a friend and a strict disciplarian at the same time. Eventually they passed their matriculation exam
with flying colours. But I was especially proud and happy about my first student, who coming from a
very compromising background was able to pass in second division. I felt very proud and accomplished
helping him. He is still one of my favourite students, since he not only helped me to pursue my wish but
also made me a more confident person who was able to contribute to the society in a very small way.

After I graduated in 2018, I was soon placed in Tata Consultancy Services through campus hiring. With
my training location posted as Ahmedabad, within 5 months of graduating I packed my bags and shifted
to my base location for 3 months. 800+ people from different parts of the country, with different
cultural and ethical values, different ethnicity and linguistic affinities, the training was one of the life
changing experiences of my life. Within a week of the orientation program, all of us were assigned
training rooms as per the technical expertise and business demands. Besides training us on the technical
skills, there was major focus on English speaking/writing and soft skills essential for corporate
sustenance. With exams occurring every fortnight, results of which add on to our ultimate evaluation
and failing would detain us at the location for two more months. During our initial training sessions with
the English supervisor she would ask each of us for a short introduction regarding our respective
backgrounds.

unique opportunity to help my fellow colleagues in their training sessions. Handpicking few members in
the room who had a natural fluency in English, our English supervisor divided the classroom into 5
groups with each member mentoring 6 other members who were not comfortable with English. Initially
skeptical of the opportunity, I decided to make best use of the situation.
