COURSE BOOK
What are we going to learn:
• Terms (technical words, phrases ) that are essential in all fields of engineering – for
example, all engineers need to discuss dimensions and tolerances, know the names of
common materials and describe how components are fitted and fixed together.
• Language for discussing and applying key engineering concepts for mechanical, electrical,
materials and civil/structural engineering – for example, stress and strain, materials, work
The raw materials for plastics are coal and oil, though many plastic materials today are produced
from oil. Plastics can be divided into two main categories. The first group, called thermoplastics,
includes well known plastics such as PVC, nylon and Fill in the blanks in the table.
polyetylene. These can be treated (heated, softened
and cooled) several times, and can be formed into
combs, pipes and bags, in addition to many other
similar products. Thermosetting plastics include
melamine, polyurethane and phenolic resin, and can
be made into tableware, foams and plugs,
respectively. However, this group differs from
thermoplastics because they can be treated only
once and harden when they are heated.
