1. I A culture of bacteria has Po number of bacteria. After 1 hr the number of bacteria is 1.5Po. If the rate of growth is
proportional to the number of bacteria P present at any time t, determine :
a. Time necessary for the number of bacteria to triple.
b. How much of Po is present after 8 hours?
2. A tank contains 100 gal of water which contains 250 lb of salt dissolved instead of 150 lb. To correct this condition a
stopper is removed from the bottom of the tank allowing 2 gal/min of brine to flow out. At the same time, 2 gal/min
of fresh water is pumped into the tank. How long will it take for the brine in the tank to contain the desired amount?
3. A peach pie is taken out of the oven at 5:00 pm. At that time it is piping hot at 100o C. At 5:10 pm its temperature is
80o C while at 5:20 pm it is 65o C. What is the temperature of the room?
4. A tank contains 1000 L of pure water. Brine that contains 0.1 kg of salt per liter of water enters the tank at a rate of
3L/min. Brine that contains 0.05kg of salt per liter of water enters the tank at the rate of 6L/min. The solution is kept
thoroughly mixed and drains from the tank at 9L/min. How much salt is left in the tank
a. After t minutes?
b. After 1 hour?
5. A nuclear breeder reactor produces waste that contains the isotope Plutonium. After 15 years, the initial
concentration of Pu in the waste has decreased by 0.043%. Determine the half life of Pu and when would Pu
decimate to 0.05% of its original concentration.
6. At 8:00 AM, the metal bar with a temperature of 90C is put in a container with water of temperature
fixed at 25C. At 8:03 AM, the temperature of the bar is taken which is 45C. Later, the bar is transferred
to a furnace of temperature fixed at 90C. At 8:12 AM, the temperature of the bar is again measured and
is recorded at 74C. When was the metal bar put in the water container?
7. A 300-gal capacity tank contains a solution of 200 gal of water and 50 lb of salt. A solution containing 3
lb of salt per gal is allowed to flow into the tank at the rate of 4 gal/min. The mixture flows out from the
tank at the rate of 2 gal/min.
a. How many pounds of salt are in the tank at the end of 30 min?
b. How much salt is in the tank at the moment it is to overflow?
