Lesson Objectives
At the end of this lesson, you should be able to:
 Describe the Session Border Controller (SBC) functionality in
SIP telephony configurations.
 Explain the role of the Session Border Controller in supporting
SIP trunking.
 Explain the role of the Session Border Controller in supporting
the remote worker.

Why Have a Session Border Controller?
 With the advent of Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP), it became possible to
combine voice and data communications over a unified data infrastructure.
 Session Internet Protocol (SIP) allows an enterprise to eliminate costly PRI and
BRI trunking and instead use existing internet connections.
 Reduced cost is a key driver behind the trend to SIP trunking.
 Many changes may be made with software only.
 Remote workers may be handled as “on-net” users using their laptop softphone or
mobile smart phones.
 The Session Border Controller then becomes a key component in an SIP trunking
and remote worker environment because it performs critical roles:
– Security
– Routing
– Quality of Service (QoS)
– Transcoding and transrating
– SIP translations

SBC Defined
 RFC 5853 (April 2010) contains requirements for
SIP-based SBC deployments.

 SBC is a nonstandard, nonspecific term:

– Session – Communication between two parties.

– Border – Demarcation point between one part

of a network and another.

– Controller – Influences data streams as they

traverse borders between one part of a network
and another, call measurement, access control,
and data conversion.

SBC – “Session”
 Session consists of:
– One or more call-control signaling messages (setup, teardown, modification )
– One or more call-media streams (audio, video, data)
– Call information (statistics, quality)
 All three together = “session”

The job of the SBC is to influence data flows of sessions.

SBC – “Border”
Border can mean:
 Edge of a corporate network
 Segments of a larger corporate network that have unique security requirements
