TUTORIAL 1 (DECISION MAKING)

Activity: Action Plan

1. How do emotions influence your decision-making process?
2. Can you provide an example of a time when you had to manage your emotions to make
a rational decision?

Emotions have a significant influence in our decision-making process. When we encounter a situation
or problem, our emotions can influence our perception of the situation and affect how we evaluate the
various options available. Emotions can strengthen or weaken our confidence in our decisions, as well.
If someone is feeling very anxious or fearful, these emotions can interfere with their ability to make
rational decisions. They may be inclined to make decisions based on fear or an attempt to avoid negative
consequences, even if it is not in line with logic or long-term interests.

Example.

An example of when I had to manage my emotions to make a rational decision was when I faced a
challenging situation at work. I have a colleague who often behaves in an unprofessional manner, and
his behaviour often makes me angry and frustrated. However, as a responsible assistant, it was important
for me to maintain professionalism and make balanced decisions.

When such situations arise, I realise that my negative emotions can affect my interactions with colleagues
and interfere with my ability to make objective decisions.

As explained in the last tutorial, I took the following steps to manage my emotions:

➢ Identifying and acknowledging my emotions

➢ Taking time to calm down
➢ Conducting objective analyses
➢ Communicating clearly and politely

In conclusion, emotions play an important role in decision-making. It is important to be aware of the

influence of our emotions and endeavour to manage them so that they do not interfere with the rational
decision-making process.
