El Oso Andino
This species is characterized by the presence of white or yellow markings
around the eyes that sometimes extend to the throat and chest area.
It can be found throughout the Andes mountain range.
This bear spends time both on the ground and in trees, they are omnivores,
although meat only represents a small part of their diet.
Unfortunately, the Andean bear faces several threats such as changes in
land use, which have fragmented its original habitat, hunting by humans
who come into conflict with it, or using parts of its body for traditional
medicines and rituals. On top of all this, the institutions responsible for the
conservation of the Andean bear throughout its range are poorly funded and
supported.
