The teacher shall explain that writers have different goals depending on what they want to
achieve with their writing. Students will become detectives on a mission to uncover the mystery
purpose behind different writing samples. Students will be divided into small groups. The teacher
will distribute a set of index cards to each group, each card containing a short writing sample. Each
group will analyze their assigned writing samples. Ask them to consider these questions for each
sample:

 Is it meant to make you laugh, think differently, or feel a certain way?

 Is the writer trying to convince you of something?

TLA 2: “WRITE IT UP” Collaboration and Creativity

The students will be divided into groups with 4 members each. They will be asked to
write their own short pieces following each of the four purposes (pursuing,
literary/entertainment, informative, and expressing) using Microsoft Word document. The
students shall be asked to bring a laptop and secure an internet connection the day before the
scheduled class.

ASSESSMENT:

1. What information does this piece provide?

2. What are those writing purposes found in your writings?
3. How will you use writing and composition in teaching literature?
