01 A number is divisible by both 5 and 12. By which other number will that number be always divisible?

Solution :
Since the number is divisible by 5 and 12, so it will be divisible by the product of 12 and 5.
Now, 5 x 12 = 60
Hence, the number must be divisible by 60.

02 Find the least number which when divided by 32, 64 and 128 leaves 8 as the remainder.

The smallest number that is divisible by 32, 64, 128 is their L.C.M.
We can find the L.C.M. of 32, 64, 128 by common division method as follows:

2 2, 4, 8

2 1, 2, 4

2 1, 1, 2

1, 1, 1

∴ LCM = 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 2
L.C.M. = 128
So, when 128 is divided by 32, 64 and 128 there is no remainder.
So, to get the remainder as 8 we need to add 8 to the L.C.M.
⇒ 128 + 8 = 136

Hence, the least number which when divided by 32, 64 and 128 which leaves 8 as the remainder is 136.

Multiples of 14 :14, 28, 42, 56, 70, 84, 98, 112, 126, 140, 154....
The common multiples of 10 and 14 are 70, 140 ,...
But 70 is the lowest common multiple of 10 and 14.
Therefore LCM of 10 and 14 is 70.

Thus, first three common multiples of 6 and 8 = 24, 48, 72 (1 Mark)

06 On the playground, children are made to stand for drill either 30 in a row or 20 in a row, all rows are complete and no child is left
out. What is the lowest possible number of children in that school?

20 times table :20, 40, 60,80, 100....
From the above table, we can see that 60 is the lowest common multiple of 30 and 20.
Therefore, the least possible strength of the school is 60.

07 List down separately all the prime numbers and composite numbers less than 20.

The numbers other than 1 whose only factors are 1 and the number itself are called Prime numbers.

Prime numbers less than 20: 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17, 19.

Numbers having more than two factors are called Composite numbers.

Composite numbers less than 20: 4, 6, 8, 9, 10, 12, 14, 15, 16, 18.

Note: Whole numbers which are not composite are prime numbers and vice versa.

08 Write all the factors of 36.

Length of first rope = 8 m
Length of second rope = 12 m
The maximum length of each piece will be the highest common factor of 8 and 12.
Factors of 8 = 1, 2, 4, 8
Factors of 12 = 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 12
∴ HCF of 8 and 12 = 4
∴ The maximum possible length of each piece is 4 metres. [ 1 Mark]

13 If 24x is a multiple of 3, where x is a digit, what is the value of x? [4 MARKS]

24x is a multiple of 3.

Therefore according to the divisibility rule of 3, the sum of all the digits should be a multiple of 3.

∴ 2+4+x=6+x

6 + x is one of these numbers: 0, 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, ... .

But since x is a digit, it can only be that 6 + x = 6 or 9 or 12 or 15.


⇒ 6 + x = 6 ⇒ x = 0

⇒ 6 + x = 9 ⇒ x = 3

⇒ 6 + x = 12 ⇒ x = 6

⇒ 6 + x = 15 ⇒ x = 9

Thus, x = 0, 3, 6, 9 (2 Marks)

14 Write divisibility test for 4 and 9.

Divisibility test for 4 : If the number formed by the digits in the tens and units places of the number is divisible by 4 , then that
number is divisible by 4 .

Divisibility test for 9 : If the sum of the digits of a number is completely divisible by 9 , then the number is divisible by 9 .

Solution
One may answer this question using a calculator and test for divisibility by 3.
However we can also test for divisibilty by adding the digits and if the result is divisible by3 then the number is divisible by 3.
3 + 3 + 9 = 15, divisible by 3

5 + 5 + 2 = 12, divisible by 3

1 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 4, not divisible by 3 .

The number 1111 is not divisible by 3 the answer is C .


Answer: C
