3 Overview
The 5G NR system supports:

■ All the uplink and downlink physical layer channels and physical layer signals specified by the protocol. These channels and signals are

used for the transmission of data and control information. The related channel measurement results are provided for high-layer resource
scheduling and allocation.

■ All the modulation modes specified by the protocol, including π/2 BPSK, BPSK, QPSK, 16 QAM, 64QAM, and 256QAM.

■ The three coding modes specified by the protocol: LDPC, Polar code, and Reed-Muller code.

■ The two types of OFDM modulation waveforms specified by the protocol: SC-OFDM and CP-OFDM.

Physical channels are physical resources used to carry uplink and downlink data and control information. For the data or information carried
by each type of channel, refer to Table 7.

Physical signals refer to a series of sequences sent on the physical layer.

Sections 6.4 and 7.4 of 3GPP TS 38.211 respectively describe uplink and downlink physical signals. These physical signals are used to measure
CSI, for example, the CQI, PMI, RSRP, TA, and SINR, and are also used by the receiver to estimate the channel.

■ DMRS: DMRSs exist in each physical channel, and are used for the correct demodulation of each uplink or downlink physical channel

and for TA and SINR measurements.

■ CSI-RS: CSI-RSs are used for CSI measurement and tracking.

■ SRS: SRSs are used to measure channels, calculate the weight of beamforming, and measure the TA, SINR and correlation.

■ PTRS: PTRS is a reference signal used for phase noise estimation, existing in PDCCH channel, to ensure the correctness of data

demodulation. FR2 unique feature.

The resource configuration management of the physical layer refers to the resource configuration management of physical channels and
physical signals, that is, the time and frequency domain resource configuration of uplink and downlink physical signals and physical channels.
Figure 1 and Figure 2shows the resource allocation of physical channels and physical signals in the DL slot, Flexible slot, and UL slot in a TDD
system.

The FR1 FDD system with 20 MHz bandwidth is used as an example. Figure 3 shows the resource allocation of uplink physical channels and
physical signals. Figure 4 shows resource allocation of the downlink physical channels and physical signals.

4 PDSCH and PDSCH DMRS

PDSCH(Physical Downlink Shared Channel),it is a main physical channel used for data transmission. It is also used to transmit paging
information, random access response messages, and some system information. Figure 5 shows the flow of PDSCH processes.

Figure 5 PDSCH Processing Flow

8 - 25
PDSCH Management

4.1 Principle

The data information carried on the PDSCH is provided by the higher layer. The time and frequency resources required for carrying the
information are scheduled by the higher layer according to the channel quality. The physical layer implements the processing in Figure 5
according to the scheduling results from higher layer.
The NR downlink transmission is transparent to UE. That is, one layer PDSCH data mapping one correspondence DMRS port, and the data and
corresponding DMRS port have same precoding method. Therefore, the estimation result of DMRS can be used on PDSCH demodulation.
DMRSs are the basic physical signals in a communication system, and are used for:

■ Physical channel estimation. The data carried by a channel is demodulated in accordance with the channel estimation result.

■ Channel measurement calculation, for example, the TA and SINR. Channel quality information is provided for gNodeBs or UEs.

The DMRS configuration of PDSCH is sent to UEs through DMRS-DownlinkConfig and signaling messages.
In accordance with section7.4.1.1 of 3GPP TS 38.211 for the 5G NR system, PDSCH DMRS resources can be configured in the frequency domain
and time domain to achieve different DMRS resources. The mapping types in the frequency domain include type1 and type2, and the DMRSs in
the time domain include front loaded DMRSs and additional DMRSs. Only type1 front loaded DMRS and single DMRS are supported for FR2.
DMRS parameters include:

■ Number of consecutive DMRS symbols: PDSCHConfig.ueDmrsMaxLength. Options: len1 and len2.

■ DMRS frequency domain mapping type: PDSCHConfig.uePDSCHDmrsType. Options: type1 and type2.

Type1
A time-domain symbol supports a maximum of four orthogonal ports.
Two time-domain symbols support a maximum of eight orthogonal ports.
Type2
A time-domain symbol supports a maximum of six orthogonal ports.
Two time-domain symbols support a maximum of twelve orthogonal ports.
■ Additional DMRS: DMRSs except for the front loaded DMRSs in a PRB. Additional DMRSs are used for Doppler frequency offset

estimation in high-speed scenarios.

Additional DMRSs correspond to PDSCHConfig.uePDSCHDmrsAdditionalPosition.
For the configuration of additional DMRSs, refer to Tables 7.4.1.1.2-3, 7.4.1.1.2-4, and 7.4.1.1.2-5 for the PDSCH DMRSs in 3GPP TS 38.211.

9 - 25
PDSCH Management

After a UE is connected and before the RRC Reconfiguration message is sent, DMRSs do not need to be configured. The gNodeB and UE need to
refer to the default configuration specified by the protocol (sections 5.1.6.2 and 6.2.2 of 3GPP TS 38.214) to send and receive data. The specified
DMRS configuration for the FR1 TDD is as follows:

■ Number of DMRS symbols: 1

■ DMRS frequency domain mapping type: type1

■ Additional DMRSs: non‒frequency hopping, Pos2

The Doppler effect leads to the decline of the time correlation of the channel. For the downlink service channel PDSCH, if the time domain
density of the DMRS configuration is not enough, the signal receiver can not accurately estimate the change of the channel response, which
leads to the decline of the service data transmission performance. Therefore, for the terminal mobile scene, the DMRS configuration of PDSCH
is additional DMRS enables the receiver to estimate the frequency offset of the signal more accurately, and effectively compensate the
frequency offset of the received and received signals, so as to eliminate the influence of the frequency offset caused by the mobile terminal.

In the above four figures, the time domain includes one slot and 14 symbols, and the frequency domain includes one RB and 12 REs.

4.1.2 DMRS—Additional DMRS

There are many combinations of the additional DMRS (PDSCHConfig.uePDSCHDmrsAdditionalPosition), symbol length
(PDSCHConfig.ueDmrsMaxLength), and frequency domain mapping type of the DMRS (PDSCHConfig.uePDSCHDmrsType). The following are
two typical configurations :

4.1.3 Multiplexing of DMRS and PDSCH

The DMRS mapping result of a single UE is shown in Figure 12 and Figure 13.

UME, configure the switch parameter PDSCHConfig.dmrsPDSCHShareSwitch to disable and enable the "DMRS and PDSCH multiplexing"
function.
2) When no data is transmitted, the DMRS power needs to be increased accordingly, refer to 38.214 Table 4.1-1: The ratio of PDSCH EPRE to DM-
RS EPRE ,to improve the demodulation performance of the receiver.

Table 4.1-1: The ratio of PDSCH EPRE to DM-RS EPRE

data

1 0 dB 0 dB

2 -3 dB -3 dB

3 - -4.77 dB

4.1.4 Rel-16 PDSCH reduced by DMRS PAPR

For the PDSCH of CP-OFDM, the sequence of Rel-15 DMRS is the same as that of CDM group, so the PAPR of DMRS is very high. Therefore,
enhancement is made on Rel-16. Please refer to the protocol 38.211 of R16. Where, DMRS sequence initialization is related to CDM group. After
the enhancement, the DMRS sequences of different CDM group are different, so the PAPR. of DMRS can be reduced.

4.2 Network Analysis

Note:
The feature activation effect depends on the network environment. Therefore, this document only guides the feature provisioning. For network
gains pertinent contents, refer to ZTE for support.

4.2.1 Benefit Analysis

For an UE moving at a high speed, you can configure the additional DMRS through RRC signaling to increase the time domain density of the
DMRS and enhance the demodulation performance of the receiver.
