3 Overview
This document describes the 5G NR radio frame structure, and describes the PHY parameter configurations related to the TDD system and FDD
system. For the TDD system, with the specific subcarrier spacing, operators can modify the slot types of radio frames and the proportions of UL,
DL, and GP symbols in flexible slots to adapt to business development requirements. For the FDD system, operators can modify the subcarrier
spacing configuration to meet the requirements in different business scenarios.
As specified in the 3GPP TS 38.211:
1 Each radio frame is 10 ms long, consisting of 10 subframes, and each subframe is 1 ms long. Each subframe of the FR1 contains 2
timeslots, see Figure 1, and each subframe of the FR2 contains 8 timeslots, see Figure 3.
2 Compared with LTE, NR supports more flexible subcarrier spacing configurations, which are determined by the transmission
parameter set μ. The number of slots in each subframe varies with subcarrier spacing. For details, refer to Table 7.
3 For radio frames of the TDD system, the slot types and the number of UL symbols and the number of DL symbols in each slot can be
configured as required. The used 5G NR slot formats fall into three types: UL slots, DL slots, and flexible slots.
■ A flexible slot contains uplink symbols, downlink symbols, and Guard Period (GP) symbols.

The frequency bands above 6 GHz use the configurations of μ = 3 and μ = 4. The frequency bands below 6 GHz use the configurations of μ = 0, μ
= 1, and μ = 2.
This document mainly introduces the TDD system of the frequency band below 6 GHz (FR1 TDD), the TDD system of the frequency band above
6 GHz (FR2 TDD) and the FDD system of the frequency band below 1 GHz (FR1 FDD). For the FR1 TDD system, μ is fixed to 1 by default. For the
FR2 TDD system, μ is fixed to 3. For the FDD system, μ is fixed to 0 by default.
4.1 Principle
By modifying the slot format parameters, the 5G NR system supports 2.5 ms doubly periodic radio frame , 5 ms periodic radio frame, 2.5 ms
periodic radio frame with configuration as DDDSU, 3+2 ms doubly periodic radio frame, 2.5 ms periodic radio frame with configuration as
DSUUU and 1ms periodic radio frame with configuration as DS.
5 - 51
Slot Format Configuration
■ The 2.5 ms doubly periodic radio frame provides a larger ratio of uplink slots.
■ The 3+2 ms dual period is divided into two types. The main difference is that the number of D timeslots is different from the number of U
timeslots. The 3+2 ms dual period (the type 1) ratio is DDDSUUDDDD, which is consistent with the ratio of 5 ms single period to
uplink/downlink timeslots) is 3+2 ms dual period (the type 2) ratio is DDDSUUDSUU).
■ The 2.5 ms periodical radio frame with configuration as DDDSU reduces the downlink slot ratio and increases the flexible slot ratio
■ The radio frame structure of 1ms DS in a single period has a larger proportion of uplink timeslots.
In the 5G NR system, you can change the ratio of uplink symbols to downlink symbols and the number of GP symbols in the flexible slot of the
radio frame structure by modifying the following parameters: the number of uplink symbols, the number of downlink symbols, and the number
of GP symbols of the flexible slot.
■ Adjusting the ratio of uplink symbols to downlink symbols in the flexible slot make it possible to adapt to uplink and downlink service
requirements of operators.
■ Different number of GP symbols adapts to different cell radius.
FR1 TDD gNodeBs support the 2.5 ms doubly periodic frame structure, see Figure 4.
■ Taking 5 ms (10 timeslots) as a period, the uplink slot allocation and downlink slot allocation in the first 2.5 ms and the second 2.5 ms of
